Cursor freezes intermittently...

Hi, I have a new MBP and while I like it very much, the cursor freezes up intermittently, sometimes for ten seconds or so at a time, and all I can do is wait until it comes back to life. Swiping back and forth on the trackpad to "wake it up" seems to have no effect.

This happens when I'm writing in Word, but also happens other times. It is so annoying that I mostly use the mouse, which detracts greatly from the mobile computer experience.

I have done a clean install of OSX and also reset PRAM to no avail.

I had to swap out my machine initially for dead and stuck pixels on the screen, so I really don't want to be "that guy" who keeps swapping systems out, but since I have a week left in my initial 14 return policy I am considering returning it and buying a white macbook, instead, because that is what I had before and it worked flawlessly.

Does anyone know the cure for the cursor freeze?

and

If there is no cursor, is Apple likely to charge a restocking fee if I return it with the 14 day period?

Thanks!

same thing here, I had my MB replaced for another reason and the same problem. Called a product specialist who had me reset some of the system preferences via terminal, thinking that something didn't migrate right from my old MBP but didn't help. Cursor will freeze at least 4-5 day depending on usage and there is nothing to do but hold the power button to reboot. First time it happened I was working on a couple stuff that weren't saved. It has to be a software issue or something else, who knows. I sure hope they fix it fast.

I told Apple that I thought it might be a firmware or driver issue, but they seem to think the problem is with the trackpad because I can plug in a USB mouse and all the issues go away. My logic was that it was a driver issue because this is no ordinary trackpad, but rather a trackpad on steroids with all the features that it has.

Anyhow, I am going to go by an Apple store tomorrow to try to replicate the same problem on a Macbook pro there. If I can't replicate the problem, then I will let them send me a new one. If I can, then there's no point in them sending me a new computer.

Note: BTW, when I was done typing this message in this webform, I went to move the pointer to click "post message" and guess what, the pointer was froze for several seconds before it appeared!

I've had macbook pro's (and their aluminium g4 predecessors) and this is the first time I've had this experience with my brand new MBP with 4GB RAM and glass trackpad. Very annoying. One thing that seems to help a little is that (following advice on some other forum) I turned off "Back to my Mac" in MobileMe preferences. But I don't think the problem has gone away. Very distracting.

I went into an Apple store yesterday and was able to show the this problem both on the Macbook and Macbook Pro. The guy I spoke to did not know anything about this problem and was quite surprised.

So I'm going to call Apple today and tell them to not bother sending me a new Macbook Pro as it appears it is not just a freak issue. This leads me to believe that it is a driver or firmware issue.... or worse yet, a hardware issue on this first batch of MBPs.

I agree with he assessment that this problem is most likely due to a driver/OS issue. The freezing cursor has been driving me nuts for the past few days.

I've got Bootcamp installed and run Vista since I've got some PC only applications that I need for work. As much as it pains me to admit this since I've been a long time Apple customer (Apple IIc), my MacBook Pro seems to run more reliably when running in Vista. I've yet to experience any issues with my MacBook while in Vista.

When using OS X, the longest I've run without a freeze is about an 3o minutes. I've tried the various suggestions mentioned in this thread and the problem persists. I was about to contact Apple to swap machines but it looks like that wouldn't resolve the issue.

I hope Apple can get this issue resolved soon. I've always admired their hardware designs and interfaces but they have been getting sloppy lately. I'm also an owner of a fancy 2G iTouch that has the WPA/WPA2 connection issues that have also yet to be resolved since the product was released.

I want to add my two cents even though this thread is a bit old. I have a 2.4 Ghz MBP that I got in June. From Day 1 I've had the problem described in this forum. I have monitored my CPU usage via iStat and have never noticed a correlation between freezing and a) any spike in CPU utilization or b) type of application. I did migrate from an older (although not that old) MBP via a Time Machine restore, so it's possible that an older driver is a problem as someone in this thread suggested.

I'm thinking it's a hardware issue (although I've noticed a lot of people in this thread say they got new hardware and the problem was still there). Here's what seems to happen. I can reproduce this almost at will (except the one time I took it to the Apple Store!):

I rest my left palm on the keyboard when I type. If I leave my hand on the area to the left of the trackpad, I'll get a freeze very soon thereafter. The length of time seems to vary. If I consciously don't rest my hand there, it never freezes.

When the pointer freezes, I can brush the trackpad all I want and it stays frozen for a while (seconds, not minutes), then works normally. If I take the MBP with one hand on either side and torque the frame a little, the pointer unfreezes immediately. I've tried tapping on the trackpad and sometimes it unfreezes immediately and sometimes it doesn't.

Given that I can make it happen and make it go away with physical movements, I'm thinking that something is getting squeezed inside and either shorting out something or disrupting some connection. When the pressure is removed either by torquing the body or just waiting, it seems to return to normal.

I'd be interested if anyone else has tried anything like this.

Mike

It seems like people stopped posting to this topic, but I am still having the problem with my MBP. I bought mine in February. One week later they swapped out computers for me and I am still experiencing the same problems with my new one. They had me do a complete re-install and not bring over any of my users from my previous MBP because they thought maybe there were competing preferences that caused the freezing.

No luck! This is amazingly annoying. Has anyone found a solution yet??
