Cursor freezes intermittently...

Hi, I have a new MBP and while I like it very much, the cursor freezes up intermittently, sometimes for ten seconds or so at a time, and all I can do is wait until it comes back to life. Swiping back and forth on the trackpad to "wake it up" seems to have no effect.

This happens when I'm writing in Word, but also happens other times. It is so annoying that I mostly use the mouse, which detracts greatly from the mobile computer experience.

I have done a clean install of OSX and also reset PRAM to no avail.

I had to swap out my machine initially for dead and stuck pixels on the screen, so I really don't want to be "that guy" who keeps swapping systems out, but since I have a week left in my initial 14 return policy I am considering returning it and buying a white macbook, instead, because that is what I had before and it worked flawlessly.

Does anyone know the cure for the cursor freeze?

and

If there is no cursor, is Apple likely to charge a restocking fee if I return it with the 14 day period?

Thanks!

Here are a couple of things to try.

1. Monitor your Activity Monitor. See if there are any processes using a large amount of CPU power when the mouse starts freezing.

2. Boot from your install DVD and run he computer from there for awhile. Open your Disk Utility in there and run that a few times. Can you get it to freeze when booted from the DVD?

3. What happens if you change the graphics power from low to high?

4. Try resetting your SMC.

i have a similar problem, but its not as serious to me. i think it has more to do with the programming and less with the individual computer. either way, alot of thing are going to be fixed once snow leopard comes out next year. hopefully thats one of them. this computer is so neat to me that i wouldn't even think about going back to the older model. just way too many upgrades from the last model.

I'd like to chime in and confirm that I have the same problem with the glass touchpad on my new 15 MBP. Often enough, when switching between applications using the Cmd-Tab shortcut, I find that the cursor is ineffective in the new application for upto 3-4 seconds. Typically, I position the cursor on say a button in the application in focus and tapping the touchpad to effect a click does not work. Tapping numerous times and/or moving the cursor around has no effect. After the delay, things switch back to normal.

This "latency" is quite frustrating and takes the sheen off of the otherwise uber pleasant machine experience.

I'm going to take up some of the suggestions and monitor CPU usage when the delay occurs. In that regard, is there an applet (sorry I'm an OSX noob) which I can embed on the taskbar (say) so that I do not have to switch to a Terminal to check 'top' ? Thanks!

Just double-click on the "CPU Usage" window at the bottom the your Activity Monitor and it will open a new window that will "float" on your Desktop. You can resize that window and monitor usage.

for me the problem only seems apparent in Word 2008...ill be typing and then quickly try and move the mouse and it will be frozen...until I take my finger off the trackpad and put it back on, at which point it will start working again. My guess is it has something to do with Word or possibly with the software which ignores trackpad input while typing...thus it might be thinking you are still typing when you try and use the mouse. I think the CPU theory is flawed b/c I have iStat running and there are no visible spikes in CPU usage when this occurs.

I was working on an image in CS2 yesterday when the MBP froze. It did not respond to "escape" or restart, so I pulled the battery. It started up fine but it happened again this morning. I was viewing a video from a website, the cursor froze and a strange clicking started. It was not like a hard drive but like a train chugging sound. I ran hardware test and everything checked out fine.

My cursor also freezes intermittently. began just a few days ago. I came across this Late 2008 MBP Forum while Googling for ideas about what's ailing my 18-month-old MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.4.11. Clicking the ESC button doesn't help, nor does wildly spinning your index finger on the trackpad. I hadn't noticed what's reported in this discussion as a delay of only 4 seconds or so and then normal functioning of the cursor. Will try to confirm that now. Meanwhile, any experiences of success by other users and fellow sufferers would be appreciated.

I am on my second MBP because of this issue. It has returned. It happens only after I have been using the MBP for a period of time (plugged in is when I have noticed it most). I connected my bluetooth mouse on both MBP's to see if it would help. When i get the "freeze" i would then grab my mouse and try it....cursor moves immediately. I would go back to the trackpad....frozen. This went on for the entire week. This weekend I got a replacement...now the same thing is happening.

The other thing I noticed....is that if i take OUT the battery....the problem disappears completely.
