Is anyone else experiencing freezes after the 10.5.5 update? My computer is locking up daily and requires a force reboot with the power button. I'm thinking it's related to cron and launchd as I see
lots of these messages in the logs prior to the lockup:
--------------------------
com.apple.launchd 1 com.apple.console Warning (org.postfix.master[987]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 989 PPID 1 qmgr 10/28/08 Tue, Oct 28, 2008 2:22:36 PM
com.apple.launchd 1 com.apple.console Warning (0x10c410.cron[1000]) Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access 10/28/08 Tue, Oct 28, 2008 2:23:00 PM
--------------------------
I have many cron jobs running (several, every 5 minutes.) I know that cron is being phased out but I would have hoped it would continue working for now.
Have you tried disabling your cron jobs for a few days to see if the freezes continue? Also, are you
purposefully running Postfix on your system? Is Postfix always implicated in the your system.log prior to the crashes?

Can't really turn off the cron jobs very easily as many of the jobs are shuffling around data that is essential to the business where I work. I've turned off some of the more recent additions and some of the more frequent cron jobs to see if there was any change and there isn't.
Yes, running Postfix to send email alerts internally for certain scripts. Launchd is logging that warning about Postfix every 2-10 minutes in my logs. Hadn't noticed that prior to you asking so the occurrence of it prior to crashing may be coincidental.
Here's the last half-hour of info from my console prior to the crash.

Looks like one of your cron entries is triggering the "Could not setup Mach task " bug/message every minute. Do you have something in cron running that frequently?
Whatever is causing that error may be related to your underlying issue. In any event, the frequency of occurrence is somewhat concerning...
I never did figure this out completely, but I have moved some of the more frequent and most recent additions from cron to launchd and the problem has gone away. I'm guessing something in 10.5.5 doesn't like the frequency of one of my scripts and/or what it's doing. In any case, things are back to normal.
