The fan on the left hand side of my new MacBook Pro makes an audible buzzing sound as it rotates, is anyone else experiencing this issue? Is this normal? The fans in my previous generation MacBook Pro did not make this noise.
MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz 2 Core Duo,
Mac OS X (10.5.5),
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 320GB HD
Talked the problem over with an Apple concierge (before making an appointment) and my local store can not only fix a CTO onsite, they have had quite a number of fan issues on MBPros since they came out.
Weather permitting (and parts available), I hope to have this thing fixed over the next two weeks!
I do not believe any of the stores carry the part - mine is on order as well.
What is your repair estimate? I have AppleCare, but now will most likely be upgrading to ProCare just so I can get this business computer fixed and back to me without loosing work time on it.
i have the same problem...left fan buzzing sometimes...time to go to an Apple Store! (as i read that most of who had the same problem solved it by changing the fan..)
Thanks to everyone here.
well, after a huge mishap and getting the run-around from apple... it was fixed within 24 hours with a procare upgrade/purchase for $100
I went in on a Sunday to get the fan ordered, they called me Thursday to come in (called at 830pm, they close at 9pm), I went in on Friday after work, had the laptop back by close of business on Saturday.
My local Apple Store just called; it was the
RIGHT fan only, and they couldn't tell for sure until the top was off. They had one fan in stock; had both needed replacement, it would've taken longer.
(Had to pay 'em $50, though, as I hadn't cloned my drive to an external HD beforehand.)
I don't know if I'm having the same issue as everyone else because mine is acceptable when idling. But I'm extremely unhappy with the 9600m GT fan.
It revs right up like a jet engine when I'm hardly taxing it. It happens when I'm doing Open GL, but even with vmware, and even watching a pokey little flash video on a webpage. The processor is not being taxed in any of those situations. This is all down to the 9600m GT. The issue is also greatly reduced if I switch to the 9400m.
It has been too distracting to get any serious work done on the thing yet.
One other thing I've noticed is that streaming video on a number of websites is poor on this machine. It's smoother on my 5 years old Vaio. Every few seconds the video jitters for a split second. That is, it freezes for about half a second. The sound is never affected so this is not a buffering issue. Playing a local MP4/H264 video or DVD works fine however with no jittering.
I have exactly the same problem. At the moment, I believe it is the problem of the left fan. I installed a software called smcFanControl and used it to test the fans. It can control the speed of each fan. If I used the default setting as 2000rpm on both sides they were quiet. When using High RPM as 4000rpm on both sides I could hear the noise. If I customized the fan speeds as 2000rpm on the left side and 4000rpm on the right side then they were also quiet! Such results indicated the noise was mainly coming from the left fan and the right fan could run at 4000rpm with no noise at all! I think I should go to the local apple store and ask for a solution ...
In the Apple service center, they thought something wrong with the left fan and changed a new one for me. Now the left fan can run at more than 4000rpm with no noise any more!
I still don't understand why this can't be a fix it while you wait thing. These are BRAND NEW machines. The fans should not be dying and making this kind of noise! The actual repair time is under an hour... and to be honest, with the easy access to the hard drive, you should just be able to take your drive out and with you. To my knowledge, this is a hardware only problem - nothing to do with settings or software.
FYI to others out there, SMC Fan Control is probably not an Apple-approved test. We all know it works and can easily demonstrate the problem, but be aware of that if you want to use that to further make your case to the Apple stores... the fact that anyone has to "make a case" to get this fixed under warranty though is very sad... they should be offering to fix this right away for anyone who has this problem with their brand new machine. They cost enough $$$, we shouldn't have to experience these issues and then wait times to fix them. It's a hardware defect problem.
