opening file with no extension

I have many files with no extension and would like to open them with TextEdit.
Unfortunately, Leopard 10.5.5 is opening them in terminal.
When I change a particular file to open with TextEdit, it works. But when I try to select "change All" I get an error message
"An error occurred while changing the application that open "FILENAME" because not enough information is available.
Do you want to open "FILENAME" with "TextEdit.app"? "
I choose "Update" and it updates that App for that one file, but not for the other files.
How do I get Leopard to open all such files in TextEdit?

macbook, PowermacG4, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

If you right-click the file and select Other and then choose textedit and check the box "always open with" that might work, but beware that many system files which are binary also have no extension and can cause problems if you open them accidentally with a text editor.
You might consider using an extension on these files just to make it simple.
