Toast Burning Problems

I had no problems until this new Mac. Roxio's support is horrible, so I'm trying here.

Mac OS X 10.5.5
Toast 8.0.4
I have burned a DVD+R just fine with Toast. A few days later I tried a DVD-R with the same data in the same method. When the burn starts, it just sits on 'preparing' and freezes up the computer when I force quit, etc. Burning through other applications (like iDVD) works just fine.

The drive's firmware is up to date
I have trashed the application and preference files, run disk utilities to fix disk permissions and reinstalled.
I am still having the same problem

Any thoughts?

The media I used was purchased at Costco: Imation/TDK DVD+R DL 8x Speed 8.5GB, media code RITEK (read using DVD Media Inspector).

Thanks. Ritek works good with Matshita drives. That's the only brand I never had a problem with.

My Late 2008 MBP has a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 drive.

Same one in here.

Toast allowed me to burn at 4X, I think, as it took approximately 25 mins to burn about 8GB.

I got a Sonic Data DL disc to burn successfully last night. I rebooted the computer and opened Just Toast. I didn't do anything else while it was burning and it made it to the end. I had the speed set on Auto. It said average burn speed was 2x, but that it was burning a 3x. It took 24 minutes to complete.

Funny thing is though, the drive in my old MBP was almost totally silent during the whole burn. I even felt the computer to see if the optical drive was even running and could not feel any vibration. When I was burning the disc on the new MBP, I would hear the drive wind up and down at times, along with a steady humming of the drive motor. I'll have to try burning in the Finder next.

I am conducting another test using Disk Utility as we speak. I'll post the results as

Thanks.

Hi,

The DU test worked flawlessly. I could definitely hear the burner but the noise was not overwhelming. In fact, the noise was much less than in my old 2006 MBP.

So to recap for me, Toast works on all media except DVD-R, where it always and invariably hangs in the preparation phase. This problem happens on 8.0.4, but I was told that 9.0.4 is no different.

DU works on everything.

I did not try CD-Rs, I will test them in the week-end and post just for completeness.

As I said before, this restores my faith in the new MBP. It is a gamble to buy one of the first 100K units around, but I must say I am very happy with the results.

Final thought: I always used the high-speed graphics card while burning... I should hope it does not make a difference even though the chipset is new, but it is worth saying to eliminate all alternatives.

Thanks to everyone who helped me understand the meaning of my results!!!

Hi,

I bought some Memorex 52x CD-Rs and was successful in burning at 24x (maximum for this drive) using Toast 8.0.4 and Disk Utility. I also tried to wait for a timeout from Toast while burning DVD-Rs (Toast hangs). I discovered that there is a physical timeout after which I can stop the burn; I then have to wait for another timeout and then the program will quit normally, without the need for a restart. The DVD-R will not get burned and is in fact reusable as the laser never touches it.

Summing up, my experience with this MBP seems to suggest that the drive needs to be taken good care of, including lens cleaning etc, but when it works, it works well for all Apple programs, and well except DVD-Rs for Roxio Toast 8.0.4.

I suspect there is more than one problem being discussed in this thread. In any case, there are a couple of threads on the Roxio forums about the problem many of us here are seeing with Toast and Popcorn. A Roxio engineer has indicated in one of the threads that they are looking into it.

It's booth hardware and application. With the drive that is in the Late Macbook Pro , it can only handle low amount of data, like for a podcast or web came movie-with older Roxio/toast products that are not new(toast 9) works fine as I hear from other, that is because it supports the requirements for the Drive that is in Macbook Pro. It ***** for me I don't have the new one, and wasn't planning to buy it because it works good, and 10 will be coming out soon. I am stuck using a external burner that burns faster than the cheap one apple opted for.

I am using Popcorn 3.0.2 on a Late 2008 Macbook Pro OS X version 10.5.5. The drive is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868. All OS X updates are complete. I have verified that my drive can burn DVD+R DL, and every few discs, on and off, this error dialogue box pops up yielding an unusable disc:

The drive reported an error.
Sense key = hardware error
Sense code = 0x09
Track following error.

I am using premium quality Verbatim DVD+R DL, so media is not the issue, and again, the drive has tested successfully to burn DL DVDs. Additionally, the video TS folders I am burning successfully write when I retry every few days... This leads me to believe it is a software issue. I have tried reloading the software as well, and this does not seem to help. This error message has rendered 20+ discs unusable, so understandably, it is getting costly to run the program. Possible drive firmware update? Please help!

Does it require the update to Toast 9? Not feeling like spending money just to fix a bug. I have updated my OS & firmware recently, so I'll be trying myself soon and will report back.

PS. the Roxio support admin guy who said 'we're working on it' in their own forums said that 1.5 months ago now. I'm not feeling like we're getting anywhere. As another Toast user said...

"After being a loyal Toast customer for years, I think my brand loyalty has been stretched past the breaking point. Anybody have any experience with the other disc-burning programs out there?"

Could you burn at all? I just have a specifc problem burning with Toast only to DVD-R. I'm in Africa now for a LONG LONG while. Kind of hard to just run to the Apple store and swap out my laptop. I'll call apple soon to discuss. Is there any formal recognition from Apple of this drive issue. I bought two the first day they were out, so they are definitely the first versions off the line.
