Crack in casing at headphone jack

A crack has formed in my white 3G 16GB phone's casing at the headphone jack. I don't want to return it to the store as this would be my fifth iPhone since I first got it at the end of July. Should I return it to Apple directly using their advance return system, or should I just live with the crack in the case?

Thanks!

Hi Folks!

I have a iPhone 3G 16GB and I have the same tiny plastic crack between the earphone jack and the metal frame. I think that it is a bad mechanical design, maybe a not so enough strong polimer, or maybe the design is so thin. Anyway, I don't think that this can be solve exchanging the iPhone each time, because I will happen again. Moreover, I saw the the original iPhone headphones are more difficult (stronger) to plug/unplug in the jack, which makes more feasible the cracking. So, the only solution that I see too is a credit note or rebate from Apple for this issue.

What do you think? I paid 600€ for this new piece of hardware, I never suffered anything like this issue in my previous gadgets (MP3's, Mobile phones, etc.), and I think that Apple should do something to compesate us with this mistake.

Take it easy!

Hi Tamara!

Do you mean that you didn't suffer any cracking issue close to the earphone jack? (did you plug everyday your earphones? which model ones?)I have a Black iPhone 3G and although it is a bit tricky to see the tiny crack, it is there. I didn't look for it until I saw the news in Google, but when I saw that news, I look carefully my iPhone (even with a technical workshop microscope) and I saw clearly the hairline crack there. Maybe with the black models is more difficult to notice it, but it happens, and not only to some iPhones. Moreover, I think that the problem comes not only by a bad material election, even because the original iPhone 3G earphones with MIC, are a bit thicker that other brands.

Cheers!

I've experienced this exact same thing.
And will bring my phone in to get a new one once the holiday season is over - I can't stand busy malls.

It appears that a lot of the white models have cracking issues.
So, Apple should replace it NO problem!

I had the exact same issue. I've had the phone since launch, and noticed the other day a couple of cracks between the headphone jack and the metal rim of the phone. I went to the Apple shop yesterday and booked an appointment at the Genius bar, went back after work, and with no questions asked replaced my phone for me. Apple have the best customer care ever, that is why they are one of the best. hope you get yours sorted.
