This Device Cannot Start Code 10

I have a third generation Ipod that is running on an a Pent4 2GB Gateway Windows XP SP2
It worked just fine and then I get the exclamation mark in the device manager. and Then ITunes does not see it and it doesn't work.
I am connecting via Fire Wire.
I have the latest updater and it doesn't see the IPOD to update or restore.
I have installed a new version of ITunes and it doesn't see it.
I have downloaded and installed the latest Microsoft 1394 patch and that didn't work.

This Ipod has continually been trouble since I got it a little over a year ago. I even bought a new computer so that I could use the IPOD since it didn't work on my old computer (P4, windows xp, 1gb,)
Any suggestions would be really, really appreciated.

Okay then, do this:
1. Disconnect it and close iTunes.
2. Start the iPod Software Updater program.
3. When it tells you to connect the iPod, do this:
-Force Disk Mode as explained here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
-Connect the iPod in this mode to the computer.

This should allow you to do a Restore.

If that doesn't work, then I recommend going to the Apple store for professional help.

The IPOD does not go into disk mode.
I have tried several times.
As for Professional Help from an Apple Store Are you kidding me? Have you ever been in one. A bunch of vapid kids trying to look cool.
I think the fact is this Issue is common and Apple can not do anything about it. I have wasted all the money I ever will with Apple and having bought three IPODS in the past three years all of them malfunctioned.

I will advise everyone I know not to buy an IPOD cause of the trouble I have had and the simple fact, it doesn't work.

If you can't force the iPod into disk mode, then there's nothing you can do. That's not a matter of software, disk mode is built in on the hardware level. If you followed the instructions in my previous link, and it didn't work, then replace the unit.

Kids who clearly know more than you do about Apple products. I've never, ever, seen an iPod that can't be forced into disk mode. I suspect you're not doing it properly, because if it boots up at all, then you can get it into disk mode. I can't see a failure mode where it'll go to the exclamation screen but be unable to force disk mode.

The issue is actually incredibly uncommon. This sounds more like a case of PEBKAC.

Advise all you like. None of it is true, but don't let that stop you.

And in the future, if you want actual advice, then please feel free to post here. But if you just want to complain, please go elsewhere. Apple doesn't read these forums, these are all full of people who use the iPod and try to help others on their own free time. I don't need you complaining to me, because I really don't care about you. I offered my advice because you asked a question. If you don't like that advice, well, you can shove it as far as I'm concerned.

I can reset the IPOD by pushing the Menu and play/pause button. It will go to the regular menu. I have pushed the select button and play/pause button immediately when the apple logo shows up after a reset and it will not go into disk mode. I have pushed this combination of buttons a hundred times at least.
The IPOD is fully charged and works just fine other than not being seen by the PC.
I just reformatted my hard drive a week ago and reinstalled ITUNES to see if that may be the problem. I got one good sync out of it and then when I went to plug it in a week later it is not seen.
I have lived with this problem a long time before I reformatted.

Whether iTunes is installed or not doesn't really make any difference. Disk Mode is entirely in the iPod itself. As far as the computer is concerned, the iPod (when it's in disk mode) is just another "Mass Storage Device".

I don't know what to tell you. Getting them into Forced Disk Mode has always been fairly easy for me. I can't explain why you can't do it. If it boots all the way to the menu, then Forced Disk Mode should definitely work.

hi Patricia!

odd, odd, odd. just found this on MS ... unfortunately, it applies to Windows 2000, so i
b don't
recommend the fix in your case ... but does any of the hardware look familiar?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297511

might be worth going to your manufacturer's web site to see if there's a BIOS upgrade available for your make and model of PC.

love, b

Thanks for the link, but this doesn't apply to my motherboard. My Bios is set up to the most current build so that isn't the issue.

The issue is I have had this problem forever. The IPOD works and then it doesn't. However I can not keep reformatting my hard drive just to get the IPOD to be seen. I have had the same problem on two separate powerful machines. I have updated the 1394 firewire utility from Microsoft and that did not fix the problem.

I can plug in ten other items and they all are recognized. Including another MP3 player.
I just thought by posting in this forum I could get some resolution to a problem I have had since I purchased the IPOD.
Right now it is a static album forever burned with 13 GB of music from my past.
A musical snapshot of my library two weeks ago.
