Why Is The New Click Wheel TERRIBLE?

I have the same problem. A solution I found is that whenever it's not responding, hitting any button first will make the click wheel start working again, as in "Menu", either arrow or Play.

The problem shouldn't even exist, though.

Well, if it is a defect, which I think it is, it is very common. I'm on my third 120 GB classic. First one had a buku of issues with skipping songs, shutting itself off etc., but the click-wheel was flawless.

Sent that one back to apple, received replacement which had same skipping and restart issues with the added joy of the click-wheel laziness you are describing. Sent that one back, got third unit yesterday, also installed new version of software. Skipping issues and restarts seem to have gone away, but having problems with this click wheel. I'm giving it a couple weeks,and I'll send this one back too. When listening to music, it's not that big of a deal when the wheel goes to sleep and I've got to click it back into action, but while trying to play games it becomes very problematic and unacceptable.

I bought my first ipod second hand and loved it. This is my first new iPod, and it's killing me with aggravation. I have heard before that you should wait until 90 days after any apple release so they can work the bugs out. Seems to hold very true with this experience.

I have exactly the same Problem on my new 120GB Classic. Went to the shop again and noticed that it apparently is the same issue with every iPod Classic 120GB they have.

Then I used Google a bit and found out, that heaps of people are having the same problem! At some point Apple must have said that there was a Firmware-Problem with the Classics. There was an update announced to fix the sensitivity setting of the clickwheel, but so far there hasn't been any.

Why don't they just include a sensitivity setting so everybody can adjust it himself? Or why don't they just fix it?? Can't be that complicated!!

The Problem is really annoying and I am seriously thinking about selling my iPod on ebay to buy an MP3 Player that doesn't make me freak out, when I am standing at a traffic light with my car, try to change the album and the stupid wheel just won't respond.

It is really crap.

APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Gotta agree, the wheel on the classic is terrible. Having had an iPod mini before this I was hugely disappointed when I found that it either didn't detect my finger movements or was far too sensitive when it eventually detected anything.

If it's a defect I'd love to know about it, as mines just about out of warranty.

Same here. I can't believe how poor the wheel is compared to my old 5G and even my previous 3G iPod. There is often a short lag when I browse the menus and quite frequently the stops working altogether for a few seconds. Mostly, clicking one of the buttons gets it moving again but sometimes I can go up and down the menus and it still doesn't work. I miss my old 5G so much - I'd much rather do without the extra bells and whistles (cover art in menus, cover-flow, etc.) and have a click-wheel that works flawlessly.

I'm on my second iPod 160, returned the first one when it would not sync. My problem is when I first turn it on the wheel won't work for about a minute. I wish there was a fix but I doubt we'll ever see one. My old 10 gig and the two my wife has had, nanos, are far superior.

This is just how the current generation iPods are.

I have a 160GB Classic that is very sensitive.
My 120GB Classic has all the same problems in this thread. Usually, I just wait a few seconds and then the wheel responds again. Not sure what they changed on these latest iPods.

Just chiming in about how horrid the new click wheel is! Aside from the occasional periods where the wheel just stops responding completely, I'm more annoyed by how difficult it is to scroll quickly through, well, anything. It's almost impossible to scroll quickly through a list of songs. I don't use a case over the wheel, and my old 3G iPod wheel was marvelous.

Any news on a fix for this?

Just throwing in here that I'm having the same problem and its driving me crazy. I am only mildly annoyed with it when trying to move around the menus but the problem I have the most is that it makes it almost impossible for my to adjust the volume level. I can either scroll it enough that it kicks in and goes to the max or goes to the min - I can't get it to work enough to get something in the middle.

I have had the same problem, but decided to put up with it. Now its out of warrentee, it has stopped responding totally, I have been quoted £45.00 plus P&P for a new click wheel. Wish i got it sorted when it was under the guarantee!!

Yeah I either tap it or hold it or click a button, its a stupid design if it isn't a flaw, the sensitivity on the old 5 and 5.5 gen was the best.
