Bent my macbook :(

Ive had it for two days.

I dont know if anybody else does this, but if I need to move my laptop I'll pick it up by one hand on either the left or the right side. Anyway... I picked it up on the left side with my thumb over the ethernet port and bent the chassis slightly. You cant see it but you can sure feel it, I also have a few little depressions in the left speaker grill from my fingers. Also if you hold it one handed on the right side it bends the superdrive slot slightly.

I just wanted to let people know that this isnt as "robust" as one might think.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5), 2nd gen

Correction:

Being CNC machined, each one should be very very very uniform (within
a .002 in I suspect).

My initial thought was maybe this unit was picked up while enet cable was still attached.

Now, maybe his case Alum was softer than spec (if this is a freak thing - but I suspect most don't lift by that really bad method - all the pressure/weight of the entire MBP over that edge alone basically) - and who knows how many times he did it before he noticed the bend.

Could have just been out of specs.

I just checked mine and my left side does that too. The right side, with optical is perfectly straight, or from my eyes better that the port side.

I do not know if this was like this when I opened it for the first time or if I did it. Doesn't seem to effect performance any.

If you want pics I might be able to get some. Never hurts to get AppleCare though (I am not an Apple employee 🙂 )

Take it back to an Apple Store and ask for the Store Manager, show your problem, and demand a replacement. Your uni-body HAS to be out of specs for that thickness around the enet port and it may have actually arrive that way. Either way, it is completely unacceptable.

That's a bummer along the it's not perfect sorta lines! But may i add I have thrown my mac book several times. One of them i was sure would fix my mac issues, because of the V shaped bend right down the middle of the lower keyboard half of the laptop. But low and behold this sucker is stronger than any timex i ever have had. After literally bending it back flat, then twisting it to stop rocking as it did on a flat surface, and then further prying the drive bay door open to let software in and out bada bing bada bang . I can continue with my computing troubles like nothing ever happened. Other than the little stretched piece of aluminum that twice now i have pounded back flat running just above the button to release the screen, opening the computer for use. There has been no other problems, only operator related. Yep no denial here. I'm trying a mac the old windows PC shattered they cant handle slam master cp. mc . When i figure out how to use it i think they might be better? BUT WHAT I HAVE FIGURED OUT IS, IN A SNAP I WOULD HAVE A PRINTER WORKING ON MY PC. AND IN A MONTH HAVE A FEW PRINTING ERRORS. IN THAT MUCH TIME I HAVENT HAD ENOUGH TIME TO EVAN GET IT WORKING ON THE MAC, THERE FOR ELIMINATING ANY PRINTING ERRORS. HOWS THAT NO ERRORS! IN THIS CASE I WOULD GLADLY ACCEPT A FEW PRINTING ERRORS. LOL . SAD BUT TRUE ISIANT THAT METALLIC OR SOME HEAD BANGING GROUP!

Personally, I would take it back to the store and ask for the store manager or a Mac Genius. Apple made a huge deal about the unibody. It was advertised how strong it is and how different it is. I would say that their advertising and Steve Jobs' intro video gave you the false impression that it was completely different then the old Apple laptops and you trusted what they were saying on their website and promotional materials. So yes, you did pick it up, but Apple's new statements about the unibody contributed to your being less thoughtful and careful about how you did it.
Be very nice about it, sure. But I think that it is reasonable to ask for a new one. Now that you see that it is not REALLY living up to Apple's claims about it. It is certainly worth a try.
And, btw, if you get a "no," do not stop there. Go to another store. Or call AppleCare and always ask for a 2nd tier manager.
Apple's unibody promotional materials sure gave me the feeling that it is very strong. I don't think you did anything that would be so bad, that it should bend after reading everything they said about it.
Give it a try.

hello,

I had a new MB 13" for 3 days and I returned it to the Best Buy store where it came from, they have a return policy of 14 days hassle-free if you don't like it, for a full refund... I found the newMB to be very flawed, but that's just me...

Anyways, why don't you return it, if it is so new? You can say this device did not live up to your expectations on whatever counts, bogus or not... Where did you buy it from? Apple Stores have a similar return policy.

Ultimately, timeliness is in your favor (I believe), backup your stuff and return it, then buy another one!

hey greene-r74 the same thing happened to me and I didn't notice until today. I was reading your post and then I checked mine it was bent also. I always pick my notebook up by one hand. I'm sure it's not in the manual or anything else that you should pic your Macbook Pro by one hand this is totally crazy. I don't know if I should keep this or return it but all I know is that this is definately a flaw .

Not going to happen. I am pleased with my system overall and a little (if I could change the font to 1pt. I would for little) bend is not enough for me to go somewhere and complain.

Plus I think it might have to do with the internal screws fastening to the logic board on the left side than it has to do with picking it up wrong, it's not like it is a 20lb. system. And if that is a side effect of having my machine screwed properly then I don't feel screwed.

Yeah I believe the whole ultra rigid unibody thing is a bit misleading. Torsional rigidity maybe, but linear rigidity not so much.

That keynote presentation is why I bought this machine. I still like this a lot better then the Sony I replaced it with. I may call apple and tell them about the issue anyway, but I think if I get a new one the same thing will eventually happen. Setting it down is such a common occurance that its bound to happen again. I don't live anywhere near an apple store and I bought it online from best buy. Even though I also think its unacceptable for a 2000 dollar laptop to bend within 24 horus of owning it. I don't know how much hassle its worth to get it replaced or to find another option right now. I wont buy a PC. I'm a PC tech and I work on those stupid things all day long. When I get home I don't want to fix my machine all night. Or deal with all the hassles of Vista. The "V" word. Vista is so confusing that it puts me into a fit of rage.

I think a tweak in the manufacturing process is the only way to fix this. If it adds a few grams to the chassis, big deal. It needs it. Hey I got an idea. Everybody seems to be making things out of bamboo these days. Its rigid, environmentally friendly and it wont dent.

Nov 10, 2008 9:53 AM in response to greene-r74

ah man, that *****. i saw the pics. i might not get it now. like other people on here, i find it completely natural to pick up my laptop with just one hand to move from one place to another. my 2006 macbook pro was in my backpack and a sat it down too hard on the table, and when i opened it up and took out the laptop, the chassis of it was bent a bit too. but that was from force, and it was just a little dent so i couldn't really complain, but stuff like bending because you pick it up is ridiculous! maybe apple should look into a using a material that isnt so flimsy and pliable for their notebooks. maybe that carbon metal rumor thing that's going around might be a better choice of material. anyhow, this story is a damper, as i was looking forward to upgrading from my current macbook pro to the newer, faster, unibody macbook pro.

People,

With all possible respect to Greener74's issue, let us try to remember that this has been an isolated incident to date.

This issue could very well have been an error that had occurred during production.

Either way, the error should not be present. However, from my own use, I have found my new MacBook Pro to be incredibly solid. I had used ThinkPads for over 10 years, and I have found the new MacBook Pro to be stronger than any ThinkPad that I have ever had.

I have also placed some pressure in the area in question, and the aluminum has not bent in any way.

Yes, what has happened is very wrong. If Greener74 would just call Apple customer relations, I know that Apple would make it right in a heartbeat.

Until this has been experienced by other users, we should not assume all of the new MacBook Pros are flawed.

I just bought my new macbook pro one week ago. I read this post online while I was away from my home and I was curious to get home and take a look at my new notebook. To my surprise I found the same defect in the exact same area. Could this be a defect in the manufacturing process or could it be the heat that emanates from these new machines that is causing the aluminum to bend easily. In any case I find this very disappointing.

Bent my macbook :(
