Upgraded to itunes 5.0 I have no music on ipod, cant update

My 40gb 4 generation Ipod is not connecting to itunes with my T42 IBM laptop with XP. I can see the ipod as a disk but when ever i click it, it will take a very long time do anything. It also shows that I only have 15gb free space even though I ave never had that much data in the ipod, I just have restored ipod so it should be empty, other than that Ipod seems to be ok. So after installing itunes 5.0 it wiped out my ipod and all the songs in it. I have restored it, done all the apple solutions to the problem but cant get itunes to connect with the ipod. I tried to format the ipod from windows but it just didnt do that. When ever i try to contact ipod anyway it takes forever to get anything done to it. I understand that many people are experiencin the same problems, but I havent found exactly the same symptoms. I tried withmy DELL D600 which have older itunes and older ipod updater and win2000 same symptoms. I took to maintenance company, they said it was ok. So any help is much appreciated, I need my Ipod!

Sort of have the same problem - I upgraded to iTunes 5.0 over the weekend and have had nothing but problems since. Unlike others, and except for not being able to connect with music store and gracenotes, my iTunes appears largely unaffected. But the upgrade has wiped 3401 songs off my iPod and I am having major issues whenever I try to update and synchronise iTunes and iPod. I manage to update about 600 songs, then my iPod beeps, goes dead and wipes the songs its just updated. Also, the segments of my library which have been wiped off the iPod are not chronologically the last material downloaded to iTunes - some have been there for months and months. I'm now entering a tech-rage zone - I love my iPod and have it available 24/7 but now it's not even half the marvellous beast it used to be. Can somebody please help??? I don't know whether to haul it at the window or cry.

I have had a very similar problem

-Currently using: Windows XP Home edition with most recent updates
-2.39Ghz processor, Itunes 5
-IPOD 20GB I only have used up 3.9GB

Very similar problem

My IPOD has recently had a weird problem after installing Itunes 5. When I
first connect the ipod to the computer everything seems to be working fine,
because the ipod displays the "please do not disconnect" message, and ITUNES
comes up on the screen and lets me play music from my ipod only for a brief few
minuets. The computer then stops playing the song it was currently playing and
I tunes freezes. After that point the only way to unfreeze Itunes is to press
select/menu on the ipod. When the ipod restarts and I plug the ipod back into
my computer it won't bring I tunes up again, and I am unable to access the ipod
drive. A screen comes up after 10 minuets saying I have to reformat my ipod
because it can not be read. I have already done so about 10 times and I still
have the same problem.

My ipod doesn't freeze when I'm just listening to it with my earphones or on my
stereo, but it laggs more thean usual when changeing songs or menus (I have
only used up 3.9GB). I have also tried using my ipod on other computers and I
get the same problem. Please Help!

I have the same exact problem. After I updated my iTunes(5.0.1 I believe), my iPod's songs got deleted but it could still update. For awhile... Then I reconnected it, and it doesn't show up anymore. I have around 9 GB of songs, 2000+ and not even one shows up on my iPod.

I downloaded the iPod update (v3.1) thinking its messed up, but it isn't since i updated it just a month ago. I also restored it which completely erased everything in my iPod since I thought it was my Ipod thats messed up. Hopefully this will be fixed because I'm not happy I can't use my iPod!!!

Same problem as most everybody who's written so far. Upgraded to 5.0.1 and now my computer will not recognize my iPod. I've restored the iPod, so it now has no songs on it. I've reset it millions of times and all to no avail. I hate that update. I now have no iPod at all and it's essentially the love of my life, so am feeling cast adrift in an unfeeling technical world. Somebody help me!!!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes AND QuickTime multiple times. The best I can get is iTunes working but getting an error message that I need to reinstall iTunes. Is there a solution?

Why is Apple not respinding to questions on the Forums? Is iTunes 5 killing every iPod?

Unfortunately, there is no going back. I tried several ways (Windows XP). Nothing helps.
