Upgraded to itunes 5.0 I have no music on ipod, cant update

My 40gb 4 generation Ipod is not connecting to itunes with my T42 IBM laptop with XP. I can see the ipod as a disk but when ever i click it, it will take a very long time do anything. It also shows that I only have 15gb free space even though I ave never had that much data in the ipod, I just have restored ipod so it should be empty, other than that Ipod seems to be ok. So after installing itunes 5.0 it wiped out my ipod and all the songs in it. I have restored it, done all the apple solutions to the problem but cant get itunes to connect with the ipod. I tried to format the ipod from windows but it just didnt do that. When ever i try to contact ipod anyway it takes forever to get anything done to it. I understand that many people are experiencin the same problems, but I havent found exactly the same symptoms. I tried withmy DELL D600 which have older itunes and older ipod updater and win2000 same symptoms. I took to maintenance company, they said it was ok. So any help is much appreciated, I need my Ipod!

I'm having similar problems. Since upgrading to 5 (and 5.1) I am unable to sync any songs I've purchased through the iTunes store, or any new CD's ripped to my hard drive.

However existing songs in my library still work fine on the iPOD.

Apple really need to sort this out. I cant help but feel we are all Being somewhat ignored. I've sent 5 emails to the support desk, and with reply at all. It would also appear that the volume of posts in this forum are not being looked at.

Apple - if your listening - this is something you really need to sort out, and quickly. As far as I am concerned, your software is not allowing me to listen to music I have purchased through the store, as It's mine this is therefore in breech of the licensing agreement.

FIX THIS NOW !

And another. Since upgrading my iPod wont talk to my computer anymore. I've even tried a fresh intall of original iTunes onto a new hard-drive and operating system.

Still the iPod won't talk to and Apple software. I sent it back to Apple who have returned it, unchanged. Oh, although they've wiped all of my music off now so I can't even use it with my old library.

What's going on?

Yeah, my problem with itunes 5.0 is not as severe as everyone elses here. I can connect ipod to itunes and update all my songs with no problems, except one. Since upgrading to itunes 5.0 it appears some songs, and it seems to be random, have not downloaded onto ipod completely and I only get half of it. I have restored my ipod thinking something may have happened but the problems has not been fixed. I can only guess that it is itunes 5.0 given that this problem has only occurred since upgrading to this version.

as i've posted in other threads, i too have had a major problem with my ipod since upgrading to itunes 5.0...i cannot update my ipod and i have lost 1000+ songs off of my ipod as well...

the most disturbing thing about this situation is the complete silence coming from apple with regards to this issue. we're not talking about some isolated cases that deal with old/outdated equipment and pc operating systems, but major problems that seemingly deal with users who have
the necessary equipment, equipment that certainly was appropriate before itunes 5.0 came out.

I even stopped into a local apple store to see if i could get help, but nobody knew anything...or was admitting to anything anyway...

I am very disappointed.

Exact same problem. I have been unable to get iTunes to recognize my iPods and keep getting the message that I have to reformat my iPod. I do not know if the problem is on the Apple side or with a conflict with Windows XP. When iPod Updater is used it freezes every time and I have to shut down via Task Manager, and disconnect my iPod using the "Safely remove hardware function."

I have tried using the solutions provided in the iPod support section to no avail.

I went to the "Genius" bar and they said that I had incompatible versions of iTunes and iPod updater running. I explained that I downloaded both at the same time. They sent me home to try again.

Nothing seems to be working.

I feel that we are all in the same boat. With all of the similar posts, the boat we are on is called the Titanic.

Add me to the list of unhappy iTunes upgrade bandwagen. LOaded 5.0 and things went boom. Nothing works. ipod now empty. I still have my music on my hard drive but the two do not talk nice anymore. I can't believe Apple is so quiet on this majur issue. Perhaps they are too busy preparing the X86 offerings and forgeting their loyal customer base in favor of greater volume with the wrong chip vendor. They really should have gone with AMD IMHO.

Apple I want my music back. Please respond!

This s-cks! I have spent all this money for nothing. I am having the same problem as everyone else. The only way I can get my music on my ipod is to restore, than update, and than load my music. This takes a long time. I remember the good old days, before the upgrade, when I could just plug my ipod in and it would give me my sweet music. I wish apple would accept that they have made a mistake and fix it!

Teemu,

You don't tell me whether the iPodService is running or not. (Right click task bar, select "Task Manager", select the Processes tab and see if iPodService.exe is in the list.)

Do me favor? Try this:

1. Quit iTunes and disconnect the iPod.

2. If you have the iPodService running -- Right click task bar, select "Task Manager", click on Processes tab. If you find "iPodService.exe" in the list, select it and stop it.

3. Register Atl.dll manually. In Windows, click Start, and then click Run.
The Run dialog box appears. In the Open box, type "regsvr32 atl.dll". Hit return. Do you get a message? What does the message say?

4. Then in Windows, click Start and then click Run. Type in "cmd", hit return. In the dialog that comes up, at the prompt type in "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe /service"

5. Run iTunes and connect the iPod back up to it.

Does it work now?

Along with the rest of you, I am having the same problem, which all stems from when I upgraded to Itunes 5. My ipod very occasionally works, but most of the time, when I plug it in, it brings up an "autoplay" box which runs forever... If i try the updater, it freezes and doesn't do anything. Now I am scared to try to even plug my ipod in as there are so many horror stories of people losing all their music from their ipod.
SORT IT OUT APPLE!!

The more the merrier, well not in this case. Add on more to the list. I too have now unearthed the same problem with my Ipoo'd. Just like everyone else, I have installed and reinstalled the NEWEST software for both itunes and the ipod with the same results. I am glad I found this discussion before resetting my ipod and wasting my time driving to an Apple storefront where the staff, as previously stated, has no clue how to fix the problem. I just spent 40 beans on the italk so I can record lectures and I can't afford to have my ipod not work. I'd like to think "the fix" is coming sooner than later.
