Network External Hard Drive on D-Link Router

So my wireless internet connection is working fine for all three of our laptops (2 Mac 1 PC). So I thought I'd branch out and connect a external hard drive to my D-Link router thru USB cable. Just for basic file sharing (pictures, music and documents).

I searched, called support at D-link and even looked here in this forum to see how to do it. No luck.

Is it that it is just so easy and I can't figure it out? I hope not.

Thank you

Uhhh...OK. Two things. What do I do to correct that and what does that mean?!

HFS+ is the format of Macintosh hard drive volumes. This format is not natively understood by windows pc's. It is unlikely that a d-link router would understand a mac formatted drive. So check the manual that came with your router.

The drive will probably have to be initialised (formatted) as a windows format either FAT32 or NTFS.

The mac can only natively format the FAT32 format. It can only format NTFS if you install NTFS-3G

I have just checked the dlink website and yes the latest firmware for that router enabled what they call 'shareport' this makes the usb port accept a printer or usb hard drive. The software to connect to these devices is windows only so you may be out of luck.

Hey Fellas.

Mind If I join into this convo?

Ok here's my situation, quite similar to the topic poster. I have a Dlink router and I have an external which is formated Fat32 & I have purchased the Paragon NTFS for mac: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac so that I can use the external hd on my mac.

Now here's the deal. Basically, what I want to do is;

1. connect the external drive to my router
2. send files from my computer onto the external drive

Is that possible? If so, how is it done?

Thanks folks.
