Running with an iPod

Hey there,

I have a 20Gb Dell Jukebox and find it locks up often when I run. I posted on their discussion forum and get the standard "It's a hard drive and can't be jostled like that" type answer.

My wife has an iPod Mini and it works flawlessly and never fails during running. I want an iPod!

My question is, does anyone run with a 20 or 30Gb iPod and do they ever have any problems with it due to the shaking while running? Does it ever lock, freeze or lose it's place?

I would like to convert from the Dell, but if iPods have the same issue, maybe I'll just get a Nano (that's a flash drive isn't it?) for running and keep the Dell for the other uses.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike, welcome to discussions.

I think the Nano is your best bet. Even though the Mini and other iPods may not skip that much during a jog... they will eventually skip and they're not really designed to take that type of jostling. I tried using a treadmill while carrying my 40GB iPod, and it just didn't work out at all.

Since the Nano is Flash based... it is far better suited for running.

I will add my concurrance with the other two folks:

Hard-drive iPods rarely skip, but they have been reported to skip.

Typically, the skip reports involve wearing the iPod on a belt where the impact/jostling will be more severe than either held in the hand or worn on a arm-band.

For absolute skip-proof-ness, go for a Nano or a Shuffle as they are no-moving-parts Flash based.

I will not suggest borrowing your wife's iPod as that is potentially very dangerous to begin with, but mainly 'cause the mini's are no longer in production and it might be tough to find one when (not if) you fall in love with it.

I have a 40gb. Sometimes it freezes and sometimes it doesn't. When running outside, I have started putting it in a carrier around my waist and wrapping the Ipod with a bandana to pad it and that works better and minimizes freezing.

If you're running inside on a newer treadmill that doesn't have alot of vibrations, the Ipod works fine. On older treadmills, however, it does tend to freeze up after about 20-25 minutes.
