Auto Align, anyone get it to work?

Hi, I've been struggling to get the auto align node to work. I even took photos of an object that overlapped by 50% and still it had trouble http://img162.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=29221Picture_91_1221036lo.jpg am I doing anything wrong? or is it just a temperamental effect?

Sorry if I sounded condescending.

Honestly, I wasn't being condescending.
You know how software is: we beat our heads against the wall,
and then we discover a little mistake we've made, and we go "dooh!"
and move on.

Seriously, the node works.

Since you say...
I use shake a lot, I just don't don't use it for this.

...then maybe a good place to start to resolve the problem
is to do the AutoAlign tutorial. It works. For an advanced user like you,
it will go really fast. Most likely, the process of looking
at how someone else is using the node will make you
look at your tree a little differently, and you'll go "dooh!",
fix your mistake, and share what you learned with us.

If you put your images and shake script somewhere
so we can download it, I'll be happy to look at it.
However, if I can't figure it out, I will do the tutorial myself.

It's all about learning how to use this wonderful yet
sometimes-frustrating program.

i have three image sequences taken from three cameras properly mounted on an 8 camera 360 degree mount.... so the three images overlap perfectly, about a third of the sides of each image overlap, and the analyze preview is COMPLETELY wrong and wacky, even when i put it on "robust" and it took all day to calculate. its NOT EVEN CLOSE!

really frustrating since i bought this product specifically for an important deadline with stitching these 8 videos together.

did you figure it out? or can anyone on this forum that has ACTUALLY used the auto-align node with good results? not just people suggesting to read the manual....

I cant answer your question without seeing the footage ( and i suppose if there is anygreat movement within he frame this may be throwing off the node)

If the cameras themselves are on tripods and locked off it may be easier to patch the images together yourself using an over node or multiplane.

Make a color node the size of the image you want to eventually end up with and place the differnt plates over this.

As with any of the automated functions - in any programme - there are things that will make it go wacky - and I think following the instructions in the help file is good advice by the way - the shake manual is excellent compared to many you will find out there.

If its not working for you I would try another route - and the ones I mentioned wont take you a day to figure out if they've worked or not.

there is a lot of motion, because this 8 camera mount is operating underneath a remote control helicopter flying through gardens.

the footage im testing is from only three of the cameras, doing a test walk with the mount down the street. so there is plenty of clear imagery and geometry, trees, buildings, parked cars.

i can post the three image sequences, about 200 frames each.... ???

photomerge in photoshop works so well, but im afraid i cant automate a photomerge of image sequences... right now im learning a lot about video layers and smart objects.... maybe ill get it working through photoshop but i doubt it.

is there any other software that can do this?
