Connecting Dynex webcam

I just purchased a Dynex webcam (DX-WEB1C). Unfortunately, the camera has a dedicated USB cable. I found out to late that I need a firewire cable. Is there any way to get the two (2) to start talking with each other? The package even stated "Macintosh compatable with system 10.4.9 or better."
I was hoping there would be software telling the computer to look to the USB ports for the signal.

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Dynex webcam (DX-WEB1C)

Sorry, but there's no USB to Firewire connector. Maybe you could get a USB hub to provide more USB ports.

Macintosh compatible doesn't mean a product has to use a Firewire port. Most hardware products have information available on what interfaces are supported. Did you read those before purchase?

You have the situation backwards. The dedicated cable connected to the camera is a USB cable (no way to disconnect the cable from the camera). It's the Mac OS 10.4.11 which is insisting on a firewire cable connection. If the problem was number of USB ports, I would have connected another hub a long time ago.

When I connected the camera to my computer and started up iMovie 6.0.2 the software stated that no camera is connected. When I clicked on the help feature for iMovie, I received the screen saying that a camera had to be connected through the firewire port. A major part of the reason I bought the camera was to make videos for posting on YouTube.

The best info I can find from Apple is this:

Other "webcam" style cameras may be recognized by iMovie if they follow the IIDC standard.
For webcams that are not recognized by iMovie, check to see if the camera includes software or drivers which allow you to record a short movie from another application. If the file the webcam software records is in a supported format, you should be able to import the resulting file into your iMovie project by dragging it to the iMovie project window, or by choosing File > Import in iMovie and selecting the file you wish to import.
If the footage from the webcam is in .wmv or .avi format, you may need a third party plug-in or utility to view or convert the footage to a format supported by iMovie.

This all sounds rather dubious, and I'm afraid that you may well find that your webcam will not work with iMovie 6, period. The problem is that it is described as being compatible with the Mac, but this would be for use as a webcam, i.e. in Skype, where it may well work: this will make it difficult for you to get it exchanged on the basis of incorrect description.

Just got a Dynex 1.3 MP (the DX-WEB1C from Best Buy) to work with Skype on a MacMini 10.4.11.

Keys:

Nothing comes on the CD nor at their website for 1.3 MP and OS X. You have to go to a different, discontinued webcam and download its driver. (I probably downloaded this by mistake, a happy mistake)
http://www.dynexproducts.com/p-459-dynex-desktop-web-camera.aspx
Look for Dynex Webcam:Dynex Driver OS X.10:Dynex Driver OSX 1.01.dmg in the downloaded folder. IIRC, there's a note which says this is only for 10.4.9 and up. Double-click on Dynex Driver OSX 1.01:Dynex Driver Install.pkg to install and then reboot.

Macam doesn't support Dynex.

The video only works on one app at a time. If you're playing with the camera in 'WebCam Support' (an unmarked app, I'm not sure if it appeared after the Dynex or Macam install attempts), it won't show up as a source elsewhere.

Hello, my name is Roger and I am the engineer responsible for the Dynex and Rocketfish WebCams. Both of these WebCams are IIDC compliant and work without a driver on all Intel based Macs running 10.4.x or higher. They may work with others but this was never tested. The cameras do not work with iMovies but that is a limitaion of iMovies and not the camera.
