30" Cinema Display doesn't "wake" when MacPro is booted up.

Hi all,

I've had this issue for a couple of months now. When starting up my MacPro, 80-90% of the time the monitor/display stays black. After touching the On button on the right side of the display two or three times, I finally get the monitor to turn on. Throughout this time the little sleep/wake light pulses.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I'm still searching. I tried disconnecting all peripherals, connecting the keyboard directly into the CPU, reloading the software, etc. No fix yet. When I booted the machine tonight, I had to disconnect both the USB and Firewire connections to the monitor. If I plug them back in the monitor will go black. I've been having other small issues as well, so I'm beginning the think my User Acct is corrupt. I did try an Archive and Install from the Leopard disk, but this puts the same user acct back in the system. I guess next is a complete new system install. If that does not help, then it must be hardware related.

I have a similar (or perhaps the same) problem. When my system goes to sleep often the screen display will not turn on, including the power to the usb and firewire ports on the display. After disconnecting the screen power supply for varying periods of time the display will come on and all is well. As far as the keyboard theory, I am using the original plastic apple keyboard.

I found my problem is reoccurring with the original white plastic keyboard. However, I did find a firmware update for the aluminum keyboard that was not installed on my system. Make sure you keep your software up to date.

No fix for this problem yet. I'm currently building a new operating system and user account on a fresh hard drive in an attempt to figure out if this is a software problem, or a possible hardware issue.

Same problem here, I have this issue with a 23" ACD and the old white keyboard, I have that setting at home, In the office I have ACD 20, with the aluminum keyboard and never experienced the problem.

The problem at home with 23 ACD just started last week, I couldn't figure out what's going on until I read this thread, so If I unplug the USB it works.

This is a weird issue... any help would be appreciated.

I have a MacPro with a 23" Cinema Display that started behaving poorly recently. It is exhibiting the refusal to wake on startup issue that many are complaining about here. After shutdown, the display will not "light" EXCEPT if I unplug the power and data cable from the power brick BEFORE I start the computer.

This started on or about updating to 10.5.6 and has made use of my primary workstation MUCH less useful. Having to get on my knees and unplug and re-plug cables every time I start my computer is getting ridiculous.

I posted a problem on GetSatisfaction.com:

Thanks for your assistance.

I'm having the same issue. For a while I thought it was "gone", but now I realize it's just that I didn't shut down the computer for the past week. I've tried a million things: repair permissions, throw out the boot cache, reset PRAM, reset the SMC by shutting down, disconnecting power cords and all peripherals and display cables, and connecting again, swearing, invoking the gods, etc. The first time I reset the SMC the display came on so I thought that was it, but I've been having the problem again, more and more, and now that doesn't work. I have not noticed any patterns like others mention about having to disconnect the display power brick or disconnect the USB cable or anything like that (though I've certainly tried).

I don't think this has anything to do with display itself, however, because the display responds normally if I connect it to a laptop. As soon as I can I'm going to lug my computer over to a friend's house to test it on his display, just to rule that out. Then I guess I'm going to have to part with it somehow to have it fixed (aaaaauuuugh!!)

So, no new ideas here, but I figured I'd join those of us hoping for answers.

Well, I've tried just about everything too. I installed a clean 10.5.6 system only to have the same issue. My guess is the video board. Safari and Mail invoke thin horizontal lines across the windows, so that's telling me the hardware is going out. I did pull the X1900 and blow air through it in an effort to increase its cooling effort, but only to find the problem still exists. Just tonight I connected a second monitor to the video board -- the 30" stayed black while the smaller monitor fired right up. My guess here is the video board is having an issue with a cold boot to the 30" screen.

I guess I'm at my wits end with the testing. Next will be to haul the stuff into Apple for a complete diagnostic test... and hopefully a new video board. I've been a long time fan of ATI, but now I'm beginning to think NVIDIA is in my future.

As stated before I am having the same issue with the MacBookPro and the 23" ACD I have at home.
In the office I have a 20"ACD and works perfect.

After reading the forums, and some trial an errors, the only consistent way for me to make it work its as follows.

With the MacBookPro off, I disconnect the power and data cable from the brick, then I plug the monitor to the computer and the data cable and power to brick, but I don't plug the brick to the wall.
Then I turn on the computer and once started up I plug in the electric cord of the monitor to the wall, so it wakes up.

This so far is working for me and any other combination or USB plugged or unplugged didn't make any change for.

I hope Apple fix this soon, it is really bothering......
