Unable to "Log and Capture" with Canopus

Did you set your capture settings to "Non controlable device"?

Connect a FireWire cable between your Mac and the DV In/Out connector on the back of the VTR.
You don't need the Canopus between the two.

You need a 6 pin to 4 pin FireWire cable. The 6 pin connects to the computer, the other end goes in the deck:

Does this setup work with your Beta deck?

I would have thought that both decks would use the same remote protocoll, being as both are Sony inventions.

Please explain your setup/connection chain.

fwiw - 2 firewire playback/conversion devices connected at the same time will confuse the heck out of FCP.

you can't control the deck through the Canopus. Firewire is what controls the deck from the computer, so if the firewire port on the deck is broken, no can do. You have the deck going s-video, component, or composite into the Canopus right? No such thing as deck control going through any of these types of connection. No timecode either.

ah, didn't look up that model. My Canopus doesn't have the RS422 connection.

Have you looked in the menu for the DSR20 to see if there is an RS422 control option that has to be enabled? I know on the DSR25 and 11 you have to enable the Firewire control in the menu. Might be the same with the 422. On the DSR25 there is, in the ETC menu, at the top it says commander and the options are wireless and control s. Wireless would be your remote control, maybe control s is the RS422 option...?

I kinda think you've configured this all wrong and Canopus is now part of Thomson/Grass Valley so I'm not at all surprised that the support on this product is a little, umm, lacking.

I would try this to start and then start on other variations if it don't work.

DSR20 - Firewire - ADVC700
DSR20 - RS422 Dsub cable - ADVC700

ADVC700 - Firewire - Apple G4

FCP's capture/control configs should be set to firewire, logically.
DSR20 control menu should be set to rs422
ADVC700 should be set to rs422 control

Thinking through what you have going on this sounds logical to me.

I don't understand why you're using S-video between the DSR20 and the ADVC700. You're undergoing a conversion of DV25 to analog if you use S-Video as well as the bnc composite spigot and then converting back to DV25 in the 700.

Do you need a frame sync or just RS422 control?

Is there any reason you can't use a [Keyspan 28X|http://www.keyspan.com/products/usa28xg> with an [Addenda|http://www.addenda-elect.com/product.htm] Mac to RS422 cable? I used this set up for a long time on my G4 and it worked great with my JVC vtr.

He's using s-video because he posted that the Firewire port on the deck is broken.
