Corrupt iPod file

I've had this happen twice now and can't figure out what's causing it, so I'm hoping someone else has suggestions. When I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, an error message pops up saying that the "PlayCount" file on the iPod is corrupted and unreadable and needs to be repaired using the "Chkdsk" utility. It does seem to actually be corrupted because it will not record new play counts or keep track of those songs I've played immediately before it has this issue. Both times I've used the "Restore" feature of the iPod updater, which does fix the problem, but this isn't exactly ideal because then I have to load everything back onto my iPod, which takes quite awhile because I have a few thousand songs. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening so I can (hopefully) prevent it from happening in the future? Oh, and this is a recent development, too. I've had the iPod since September and the first time this happened was at the end of December and then again earlier this week, and (as far as I know) I haven't been using it any differently. Thanks!

Ah!
It worked! The right chkdsk worked! Many thanks to you monsieur la Gopha. For the first time I have my whole library on my iPod.
Although when chkdsk first finished, iTunes started to update then shortly froze and when I checked the iPod, all the songs were deleted. When I tried again this morning, it was updating songs faster than ever before.
Thanks again Gopha

Hey Gopha,

First of all i'd just like to thank you as your postings on this matter has been of great help and it is good to know that someone out there is actually attempting to fix this problem.

By the seems of things i am one of the luckier ones with a version that can use 3.0.1 and the temporary fix of using the chkdsk worked although the Soft Reset did not.

Thanks for all the postings as they have been very useful and informative. Id also like to add that all the information and directions for use have been very easy to understand and implement.

Lets hope that Apple will eventually do something about this problem.

Cheers,
Richie

Cheers Richie,

Thanks for your kind comments. Whilst I'm fielding questions and attempting to provide assistance for folks with this issue (I know how frustrating the error message is) - I'm by no means actually able to fix this issue from a standpoint of 3.0.2 firmware. That's over to Apple's US Engineering boffins.

For me, it's just a case of suggesting 3.0.1 as a bug-free firmware in the meanwhile whilst Apple gets it sorted. If folks are happy implementing this (as many have been), then I'm happy to continue recommending it. It does work perfectly fine for folks so far...!

Happy Podding, and thank you again for your support.

Kind regards,
Gopha
