Corrupt iPod file

I've had this happen twice now and can't figure out what's causing it, so I'm hoping someone else has suggestions. When I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, an error message pops up saying that the "PlayCount" file on the iPod is corrupted and unreadable and needs to be repaired using the "Chkdsk" utility. It does seem to actually be corrupted because it will not record new play counts or keep track of those songs I've played immediately before it has this issue. Both times I've used the "Restore" feature of the iPod updater, which does fix the problem, but this isn't exactly ideal because then I have to load everything back onto my iPod, which takes quite awhile because I have a few thousand songs. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening so I can (hopefully) prevent it from happening in the future? Oh, and this is a recent development, too. I've had the iPod since September and the first time this happened was at the end of December and then again earlier this week, and (as far as I know) I haven't been using it any differently. Thanks!

Matt,

Someone has posted that the website download for the Updater has gone down. Are you requesting an emailed copy because you have experienced this too, or have you tried downloading it here? If the link is indeed down, I would recommend replying to one of Chris' posts directly, so that his subscriptions can notify him directly. I can't email it myself, my mail server has an imposed limit for attachments <sorry>.

Are you experiencing the chkdsk error on a Mac...? We were under the impression that it was only Windows machines being afflicted.

You would have to downgrade by Restoring your iPod using the iPod Updater, or trying the rollback-Update procedure detailed here.

Kind regards,
Gopha

Hello to everyone.
I don't know if anyone is still subscribed into this thread (doesn't help that Subscriptions is currently down), but it appears the Updater download site posted by Chris is no longer available.
Is there anyone who can send the Updater out to folks on email, or is there anyone who can get in touch with Chris Capell or David Robertson? These two kind souls were the original users who were able to send the updater out on email because their mail servers had the sending capacity.
If someone could alert either Chris or David - that would be much appreciated. Either that, or if Chris could please repost the Updater for download on a website...?
I will be in touch with Apple to see if we can get 3.0.1 Updater reinstated on a secluded part of the webpage for download.
Kind regards,
Gopha

Subscriptions on Discussions is currently down so Chris (or anyone else) may not be receiving alerts to new posts requesting the older firmware.

I recommend that you try to contact him via email as he's posted here to see if you can get the Updater directly. I've mailed him myself to see if he'll kindly be able to repost the Updater on a new download site.

Good luck!

Kind regards,
Gopha.

PS. Of course, you may not receive this yourself - because Subscriptions is down, so it's a bit of a Catch-22.
