I've had this happen twice now and can't figure out what's causing it, so I'm hoping someone else has suggestions. When I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, an error message pops up saying that the "PlayCount" file on the iPod is corrupted and unreadable and needs to be repaired using the "Chkdsk" utility. It does seem to actually be corrupted because it will not record new play counts or keep track of those songs I've played immediately before it has this issue. Both times I've used the "Restore" feature of the iPod updater, which does fix the problem, but this isn't exactly ideal because then I have to load everything back onto my iPod, which takes quite awhile because I have a few thousand songs. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening so I can (hopefully) prevent it from happening in the future? Oh, and this is a recent development, too. I've had the iPod since September and the first time this happened was at the end of December and then again earlier this week, and (as far as I know) I haven't been using it any differently. Thanks!

No particular suggestions unfortunately Matt - are you using a Mac or PC with your Pod...? Most of the issues that are reported with synchronisation are to do with Windows processes interfering with the sync process (firewalls etc).

If I do this, and reinstall Itunes, do I loose all of my playlists? I seem to always get error messages when I try to print a playlist and I'm thinking if I reinstall Itunes this might get solved. I NEED to print playlists (I teach spin classes, and need the printout to plan my classes).
Looks like you know what your doing! Please help if you can.
Thank you

Gopha doesn't know for sure - but usually the iTunes Music Folder (which contains your playlists) is not touched, so it should just be a case of instructing iTunes to look for your music in the appropriate (default) location.
Always ensure you backup your music, and the associated files, and set a System Restore point prior to trying anything so that you can rollback in case there are any major issues.
Can I ask please why you are reinstalling iTunes? If it is to do with the chkdsk/corrupt files issue - then it is unnecessary. Refer to our Consolidated Summary for more info ( Da Gopha, "<INDEX> Corrupt files and chkdsk <INDEX>", 06:04am Mar 22, 2005 CDT).
I have posted the HP Instructions as a Tip which might help things a bit for clarity: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68ae5f29

Actually, I got the installer for the 3.0.1 updater.
I will host the file on my webspace within the next few hours for all to download limitlessly (yes, that's right, no download bandwidth limits)
I will make a new thread with the link for all of you, so no need to email it relentlessly lol.

That would be useful to have Steve.
I'm sure you're aware that Chris' original post of the Updater was fine in the end - and can be downloaded here: Chris Capell, "SUMMARY: Corrupt file requests chkdsk :REPOST" #4, 01:03pm Feb 2, 2005 CDT but no doubt it would be useful to have 2004-08-06 available at two separate locations just to have an effective backup.
Feel free to post your new location, along with any download instructions if you have any for your filehost. If you can also post in these two threads of mine:
Da Gopha, "SUMMARY: Corrupt file requests chkdsk :REPOST", 09:46am Feb 2, 2005 CDT
and
Da Gopha, "<INDEX> Corrupt files and chkdsk <INDEX>", 06:04am Mar 22, 2005 CDT
...that would be useful. These are currently the main points of discussion for the chkdsk errors. This thread here is more of a reference point - although it's become more active over the past few weeks I guess because of the download site's intermittency and the fact that it's been bumped back up to the top of the forums with all the new posts...
Cheers!

Hello to all,
Following some grief we were having with the 2004-08-06 Updater download site, Chris checked and verified that the format of the site has changed, and has kindly reposted a new link to the Updater for those who would like 3.0.1 firmware (or equivalent) here: Chris Capell, "<INDEX> Corrupt files and chkdsk <INDEX>" #39, 05:54am May 16, 2005 CDT

The reason I would want to do it is b/c I can't print. I get some funky error message everytime I try to print a playlist. I need to print since I teach spinning and need the playlists for my classes.
I also have issues when I first doc the Ipod. For some reason it says it can't read the Ipod until the other user is logged off. This is bizarre b/c the other user does not use the Ipod at all.
It is just a bunch of little reasons why I would want to do this. Nothing major, but just annoying little instances that cause me to waste my time.....
Another question: How do I backup my music? I have it all on an external hard drive. How do I set a System Restore Point?
Thank you for your help!!

Hello Catherine,
1) Your printing error is something that I've not experienced before in relation to the chkdsk error - perhaps you might like to repost a brand new thread detailing your exact error (can you repost it detailing the exact symptoms to refresh our memory please?)
2) Docking the iPod and having the other user logged off - this is a common event that I've detailed here: Da Gopha, "iTunes incompatible with Fast User Switching", 07:03am Mar 19, 2005 CDT . iTunes is not compatible with Fast User Switching. Irrespective of whether your other user is using the iPod, the iPod/iTunes service is still launched for every user at logon, so to connect successfully, you have to ensure that you are using the sole copy of the services.
3) System Restore (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore, and follow the nice little wizard to Create a Restore Point) - but this won't save your music in the event of a serious issue - it only saves system settings, not your data (music is considered data).
4) To backup your music, I think the simplest way is just to drag it over to another external hard drive (copy-drag your My Music folder - or whatever your music folder is). You can also backup to CD or DVD in the same way that you'd backup anything else - just work with the files in your iTunes Music folder. If you're just interested in doing the backup until you can verify if your uninstallation/reinstallation of iTunes has been successful, you can just drag a copy of the iTunes Music Folder to another location on your hard drive (providing you have enough space).
For the uninstallation process, this may be of use to you: Da Gopha, "iTfW: stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes", 09:51am Apr 5, 2005 CDT
If you need any further clarification or assistance, feel free to post back...
Kind regards,
Gopha

I had the same thing happen. I am using windows. I connected the iPod and then opened "My computer" Windows XP assigned a drive letter to the ipod. In my case, it was letter "G". From the start menu, I chose run, then typed "cmd" into the little box. This opens a "dos" window. Then I typed "chkdsk g: /f" (no quotes). XP checked the disk and fixed the corrupt file. Make sure to use the /f option as this tells XP to "fix" the problem. It's working great again. As to what caused it, that's a mystery to me! Hope this helps.
