Corrupt iPod file

I've had this happen twice now and can't figure out what's causing it, so I'm hoping someone else has suggestions. When I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, an error message pops up saying that the "PlayCount" file on the iPod is corrupted and unreadable and needs to be repaired using the "Chkdsk" utility. It does seem to actually be corrupted because it will not record new play counts or keep track of those songs I've played immediately before it has this issue. Both times I've used the "Restore" feature of the iPod updater, which does fix the problem, but this isn't exactly ideal because then I have to load everything back onto my iPod, which takes quite awhile because I have a few thousand songs. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening so I can (hopefully) prevent it from happening in the future? Oh, and this is a recent development, too. I've had the iPod since September and the first time this happened was at the end of December and then again earlier this week, and (as far as I know) I haven't been using it any differently. Thanks!

I recently bought an Ipod and tried to update it on a friends computer. She has an older Ipod, with the 3.0.1 firmware. I have been having problems updating my Ipod and receiving the "chkdsk" error message. She does not have that problem. Can I install the 3.0.1 firmware from her Ipod onto mine? Any other suggestions? Or can you send it to her? Her email is lucla@mail.ocis.net

Hello Kathy,

You can't transfer iPod firmware directly between iPods. But if you mean: can you use 3.0.1 firmware on her computer to Restore/rollback your iPod to 3.0.1, the answer is yes - it should be fine.

Be aware obviously that you will lose all of your music and data from iPod. Also, if you are running 3.0.2 on your own computer, when you plug in your 3.0.1-firmware-iPod, it'll complain and inform you that your iPod is not up to date. Just hit cancel, and manually start iTunes for normal synchronisation.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Da Gopha.

Hello again,
I do not actually have a computer (to speak of) at the moment. Her software was first installed on my iPod, and we ran into trouble. Then we tried using the software that came with my 4G iPod. Still the same problem.

Please forgive my computer illiteracy but I believe my iPod needs the 3.0.1 firmware to correct the "corrupt file" problem?
If so, what is the procedure to use the 3.0.1 firmware on her computer to restore/rollback my iPod to 3.0.1?
Thanks so much!
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

You might like to refer to post 10.1.1 above (you might have to hit View All on this thread - it's gotten pretty long now, and the system only shows you messages in stages).

If her software was first installed on your Pod, and you had trouble, what kind of problems did you encounter? Was it the sysinfo message - or something more serious?

As I'm sure you're aware, a Restore will completely wipe iPod.

Briefly:

You'll need to connect your iPod to her computer. Be aware that her iTunes is likely to launch when this is done, and if you have autoupdate enabled, her music library will be copied to your iPod. But this is of little consequence, because you're about to wipe it all anyway.

Launch the relevant iPod Updater (Start, All Programs, iPod, iPod Updater - choosing the right one for 3.0.1 firmware). Select Restore and follow the instructions, making sure you connect iPod to the external power source to complete the operation when prompted.

Check it's been done correctly by going into Settings, About in iPod, and check firmware version as 3.0.1.

Then reconnect your iPod and synchronise your music as you'd normally do...

Easy as pie. In theory. Let us know how you get on...!

Good luck,

Da Gopha.

Jose,

Can I kindly suggest that you please post this in a separate topic of your own on the main board? It's unrelated to our corrupt iPod file discussion. That way everyone will be able to see your post, and you'll have a better chance of getting help.

Just some friendly advice in good faith - because some people who hate threadjacking will really bite your head off for doing this...

In response to your query though, have you tried a Reset/Restore on your iPod?

Kind regards,

Da Gopha.

Bit late with this, but, it is possible to roll back to previous OS updates without restoring the whole iPod and with just a little bit of editing.

Enable disk use in iTunes if it isn't already, then in Mac OS X, go to "Utilities" (shift-command-u) and open the Terminal, then type this (with the name of your iPod in place of "YOUR IPOD NAME") at the Terminal:

/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /Volumes/YOUR IPOD NAME/iPod_Control/Device/SysInfo

This will open the hidden text file that contains the OS software number, mines looks like this:

BoardHwName: iPod Q14
pszSerialNumber: U23413E5PNU
ModelNumStr: M9245
FirewireGuid: 0x0014BDB2
HddFirmwareRev: JC001B
RegionCode: B(0x000C)
PolicyFlags: 0x00000001
buildID: 0x02208000 (2.2)
visibleBuildID: 0x02208000 (2.2)
boardHwRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
boardHwSwInterfaceRev: 0x00030001 (0.0.3 1)
bootLoaderImageRev: 0x00010000 (0.0.1 0)
diskModeImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
diagImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
osImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
iPodFamily: 0x00000000
updaterFamily: 0x00000000

Just change the numbers to make them smaller in these two lines:
buildID: 0x02208000 (2.2)
visibleBuildID: 0x02208000 (2.2)

So, it could be 0x01208000 (2.2)
Change both lines the same, they probably won't be in the same order as shown above and the numbers will be different (this is on a 3G with 2.2.2 OS)

Save that, rerun the older iPod updater that David has been e-mailing out and it will now give you the option to "Update" and put the "latest" software on your iPod.

It'd be a similar task in Windows using your favourite text editor.
