Customising Leopard color scheme or individual window elements

I've made the switch from Windows to OS X. So far it's been great, no regrets.

One thing that was very useful to me in Windows was the ability to customise the color of the different windows elements. Specifically, I modified the "Window" color (i.e. what you generally see as the background color in a mail message, word document etc.) from the default white to a light pastel color. Is there any way to do this in OS X/Leopard? This goes right to the heart of useablity for some - for example some dyslexics find it difficult to read black text on a white background. Changing away from white can make a big difference.

I could just use a transparent colored overlay, but hey, this is a Mac. Surely it's changeable somewhere.

Any help very much appreciated.

AFAIK, it's not doable using Mac OS X tools. You might be able to do it in select applications, but that's for you to figure out. Since you're new to the Mac, see these:

AFAIK, it's not doable using Mac OS X tools. You might be able to do it in select applications, but that's for you to figure out. Since you're new to the Mac, see these:
