"Problem with Shortcut" - This action is only valid for products that are..

I was using my iTunes to arrange some songs yesterday. I believe it is the version just before the newest version. Today, when I clicked on the iTunes shortcuts (even under the start menu), all I could get was "Problem with Shortcut - This action is only valid for products that are currently installed".

So I tried downloading the new iTunes. It could not remove the old Quicktime and iTunes, so would not install. Then I went to the Control Panel to Uninstall Quicktime and iTunes. Neither would uninstall. I only got the same message - "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". Very strange and i wonder if this is a virus or if something else has happened. Anyone else experience this? I can't launch iTunes or Quicktime now.

Same here. I updated to 8.0 and actually used it a couple of times. Now when I try to open it I get the same error message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". I tried reinstalling and I get a message that says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below".

Problem is, I can't find the *.msi file anywhere, even when doing the search function on the PC!

This is a longstanding problem with iTunes and it's **** annoying. Don't worry though, you don't need to uninstall or reinstall iTunes! The problem is with the shortcut only. Every time itunes updates, it breaks old shortcuts. You can normally find a fresh, working shortcut in your start menu somewhere, in which case you can drag or copy that shortcut to different places (desktop, etc) and then delete the old, broken ones.

Ok I have discovered the solution after searching for a VERY long time.

1. You need to download the program windows installer cleanup utility ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301)
*click run not save

2. Find the file, I had a little trouble finding it after it was installed.I had to go to my computer and search for files in "my computer" beginning with W and having the file size of "at most: 4000 kb"

3. once you find the file, some of you may have no trouble finding it, open Windows Cleanup

4. Find iTunes and click it, then click remove

5. After itunes is removed, re-install it from apple.com

I hope this helps!
