    update failed!
    waited for download
    then iTunes got stuck while "backing up" but iPhone never acknowledged this
    turn back on says its gonna install new iPhone update, select ok
    it pretends to back up, but the iPhone slider never changes to "slide to cancel" stays slide to unlock
    iTunes then informs me:
    "iTunes could not sync ^0 to the iPhone "Ryan's iPhone 3G" because an unknown error occured (-19)"
    what to do guys?

    nah man that's definitely not the cause since I clean installed my iTunes (uninstalled then installed with latest version) and rebooted before trying the 2.2 update. seems like it just likes to do it to random unsuspecting windows xp users. know, in some countries, this could be considered an act of war. =p

    thats a terrible idea! do you know how long it takes to put 11 GB of stuff back on an iPhone
    i am not going to redo everything
    plus i haven't backed up my phone in a while because it takes three hours sometimes but sometimes just a few minutes

    My phone was working perfectly before I updated but I was prompted to do so every time I synched from iTunes and over time that became very annoying..

    I updated my iPhone to 2.2 but an unexpected error occured during the update...of course, what else could go wrong with the iPhone 3G?

    Due to the not too surprising unexpected error, I was prompted to restore my iPhone in order to install the 2.2 update and doing so I lost everything, including business contacts, email accounts, photos, music and apps that I purchased, class notes, etc.

    Thank you Apple for a marvelous product that has done nothing but turn my hair grey.

    that solution is only for ppl that experienced an "error" in the middle of updating to firmware 2.2, leaving the iphone "frozen" on the "plug to itunes" screen.

    That worked like a charm! I've been fussin around with my phone for roughly the past 6 hours (had a a REALLY boring night class tonight, had nothing better to do, haha), and I stumbled across your post...Worked great! Thanks man! Yeah, its a bummer to reload all my stuff, and a loss of some of my pictures...But hey, oh well. Take what I can get!

    awesome! glad i could help. =] as long as this doesn't go on everytime i try to update the firmware, i'll be a happy man. (or maybe it's time to upgrade my pc) lol dangit if only $$$ weren't so tight now-n-days. =p

    if you're implying that your iphone is frozen with the "plug to itunes" screen, then i wish i could say "try the steps i listed above!" but unfortunately it only applies to windows xp and relatively vista. perhaps there's a way you could replicate the process on mac and list the steps for others having the same problem but running mac?

    If anyone knows how to hard reset the iphone after a failed update, please help me out!

    My iphone failed on the 2.2 download (from 2.1) and I have lost my expensive little gadget as well as my ability to make calls. Apple makes me furious - if they have seen this and are still allowing people to download, they should be lined up and shot.
    I was in the business a long time, and you just don't do this.

    I listed steps on this thread on how to solve this problem using a windows xp pc. give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

    hopefully you backed up your iPhone before you attempted to update. =/

    Our two 2.2 updates worked seamlessly, on my iPhone and my wifes'. We both use Apple computers with OSX Leopard. There is no 'like with like' comparison with OSX and Microsoft Windows on a PC. Apple sell a product which is both System and Software. Microsoft sell an operating system (some might question that) but as Windows goes out into the world, its mounted on any hardware and is expected to work. In my experience, there are too many problems with Windows. Of course there are die hard geeks who run Windows.

    Would you buy a car which had another company's engine and drive train in? In the end, the price of a well designed working product is cheaper than the more unreliable hybrid of Windows with endless problems.

    The iPhone works, which is more than I could say of the Windows Mobile device I ejected as soon as the iPhone 3G arrived.

    My advice to Windoze users... get a machine that works and use it out of the box.

    Mikee you rock.
    Well, I'm not done restoring yet, but early signs all point to "you rock."

    It's pokey to restore a 16 gig iPhone, but it's faster than driving to an apple store.

    The key parts of the process seem to be:

    - shut down iTunes
    - uninstall the Apple Mobile Device (restore) driver
    - reattach iPhone BEFORE iTunes
    - start iTunes AFTER the drivers auto-install

    Hey, cool -- the OS restore just finished while I was typing.
    Now it's restoring my data.

    Hold on to your seats!! iPhone 2.2 software is here!
    *Step one:* Take a week off from work
    *Step two:* Make sure you have at least 4 PCs available (some of which need to have never been connected to ANY iPod).
    *Step three:* Change your iPhone voicemail to say something to the effect of, "Hi you have reached ____. I will be without phone service for the next six to seven days while upgrading my iPhone. During this time, I am available by snail mail and smoke signals only."
    *Step four:* Backup iPhone (several times)
    *Step five:* Begin upgrade
    *Step six:* Bang head into wall and wonder if this is more or less painful than prison sex
    *Step seven:* Wonder which idiot from Microsoft Apple hired to introduce this new bricking feature into EVERY software update for iPhone

    This has been my experience everytime I have tried to update my iPhone, or my wife's Touch.....
    I love the device, it really is an amazing product. But this upgrade process is killing me.

    I tried updating mine yesterday on my computer and it kept saying that there was something wrong with the server and thats not true because it would be downloading for a while then stop every few mins and start over again. So i'm going to try updating it on my best friend's comp and see how to go from there. Also i havent yet updated the latest iTunes but i do have the update before the one that recently came out. HEEEEEEEEEELP.
    Or should i just let them do it at the Apple Store?
