Will upgrade to 2.2 lock my legally unlocked iPhone?

I have just recently purchased an iPhone from Optus Australia and I had paid AUD80 for the legal unlock fee.
The version which I am currently using is 2.0.2. My question is, if I upgrade my iPhone software version to 2.2, will it lock my iPhone?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I have a legally unlocked iPhone (SIMFree) which I bought in Australia but I am using in the Philippines. It was working fine before but when I upgraded to 2.2 I have been experiencing problems like I am not able to receive SMS messages from my provider on time - like the messages arrive many hours late or never at all. Outgoing SMS is fine and so are all my calls both incming and outgoing. Only the SMS incoming is wierd. Also another thing is that I have lost my 3G internet connectivity which I had before .... in the start, I noticed that when I turned off 3G my SMS incoming would sometimes be fine but now it is gone altogether.

I have tried restoring it back to the old 2.1 version but still no success so I placed it back to 2.2

I was told that it may be the baseband update that is causing the problem because even if I downgraded back to 2.1 the problems persist. I found out from the net that once I've updated to 2.2, the baseband also get updated and that there is no way to downgrade the baseband back (yet).

I think that this is very sneaky and bad that Apple does not allow users to downgrade the baseband specially for users like me who bought a legal and very expensive unlocked iphone and then gives me an update that only creates a problem with cellular carriers. I hope that Apple addresses this issue as I use this phone for my business dealings and now I cannot use it. Bummer and really dumb of Apple. Apple is no longer the Apple I once knew of many years back and they seem to become more like Microsoft.

I hope someone out there can help me in my predicament and get my phone working like before (or at least help a dummy like me downgrade my baseband so I can get going with the cellular carriers here in the Philippines).

I have just come back after 3 hours at apple store in London, and my (legally unlocked phone) is still locked. it is dead and they have seen many like this coming from Italy, Australia and HK, they can not understands what is happening, it seems on certain phones the upgrade to 2.2 make the phone forget it is unlocked and makes it locked again. Apple is not doing anythign about it at this time, at least I have not seen anything

Mine still has "no Service" on restart it recognises the carrier for a few seconds shows full strength signal and then drops back to no service.

I've got the iPhone back to being a 2.2 ipod Touch after I bricked it with the restore button and all that works fine with WiFi. Just that phone signal. My support here also said it was a Baseband upgrade problem that does not get downgraded if we go back to 2.1.

I had no problems with 2.1 it seems to only affect some iPhones randomly.

And now as Ayman says, even the Apple store in London can't fix it, so what chance have I got here in Indonesia.

I'll spend some time with my local geek to try more tricks this afternoon and will let you know if any progress.

HELLO APPLE.....please give us an update to fix this.

Yes me too, when I was on 2.1 I did not have any problems.

My SMS seems to be running now - I am able to receive SMS but my 3G internet option doesn't work. I am unable to connect to my cellular provider.

I observed that if I turn the 3G option on, something gets messed up and the problem of not being able to receive SMS messages occurs again. Somehow it messes up my cell number with my provider and it takes days for it to clear up. So for now I have my 3G turned off - It works well now - SMS incoming and outgoing/phone calls outgoing and incoming and WIFI - BUT no internet via 3G with my provider. Although my provider has 3G capability .... but hey this is a legally open-line iphone so I should be able to connect.

Another thing is that my cellular provider gave me their settings for 3G that is standard on any regular cellular phone (like IP address, port, Conn. Type, etc.) which I cannot configure in detail on my iPhone because it lacks the necessary field names where I can enter this info. Bummer!

So when will you guys at Apple fix this problem? Specially with the baseband/modem firmware thingy?

i have exactly the same problem after i upgraded my iphone to v2.2. my iphone was bought in hong kong in october and its model number is MB631C. i have tried with several sim cards from three other carriers (including the "official" carrier teliasonera) with no luck. the worst thing i did was to click the restore button, which bricked the iphone completely. however, one of my friends helped me to get it working again without the phone signal.

i hate that during the past two months i have become very dependent on the iphone. now i have to use some crappy nokia i found in my drawer and it isn't even 3g and i can't use e-mail etc. on it!

apple, please fix the problem with an update asap...!

It seems this may not be an Apple Problem. My legally Factory unlocked phone may not be so legal so I have discovered. My phone hardware may have been modified similar to the ones that use a sim card modifier. When the baseband (modem firmware in Settings>General>About) is updated along with 2.2 then it stops the hack from working. Going back to 2.1 doesn't take the Baseband back.

To check if yours is a fake factory unlock see the settings page and the items should be Airplane Mode, WiFi, Carrier and Fetch New Data. In the fake ones "Carrier" is missing. .....mine's missing. If you have a fake one and didn't upgrade to 2.2, then don't, ever.

This is probably why "eclau" is asking for model numbers to find where the modifications are coming from.

yes, "Carrier" is missing in my iphone as well... i'm so furious right now. i didn't even know it was possible to unlock carrier-locked iphones. if i had known, i'd activated my iphone in the store and verified that its unlock is legal. well, too late for that now.

i suppose i will be leaving for italy sometime soon to get a true factory unlocked iphone.

Will upgrade to 2.2 lock my legally unlocked iPhone?
