Will upgrade to 2.2 lock my legally unlocked iPhone?

Woah! Guys this doesn't sound too good for all of us who have purchased "officially unlocked" iphones!

Mine is from Italy and it already been sent back once for a replacement once due to hardly any functions working - including receiving phone calls!

Can anyone who has an Italian Officially Unlocked iPhone give any feedback of the 2.2 update please?

I dont fancy updating and for it to then Lock the phone up.

If it is in fact one of the models listed for Italy, you do in fact have an officially unlocked phone.

Some of the others on this thread seem to have been sold phones that were unlocked by unofficial means, at least according to the model numbers they posted.

If they bought them at an Apple store, they have a legitimate beef, but if
they bought them at some random shop in the street they may be out of luck.

But I bought this phone as an officially unlocked (SimFree) phone that's why it cost so much! I'm feeling that Apple has tricked me?

I upgraded 3 iPhone 3G from Italy to 2.2 in the US with no problems. Also some had the Carrier menu and some didn't. It may depend if they were from TIM or Vodafone.

I have seen both version with and without "carrier" menu in officially unlocked Italian iPhones. I don't know why that is. Also both types upgraded no problem to 2.2 in the US.

I just found out about the "carrier" menu.

Depending on what SIM card (service provider) you have you will have or not have the "carrier" menu.

I just exchanged from my US (at&t) to my Italian (Wind) and I had those 2 different conditions. at&t - no carrier / wind - carrier

Mistery solved. It doesn't have anything to do with real or non real unlock.

What is SimFree? (Hey, I live in ATT land, what do we know of such stuff).

Was SimFree ever approved by Apple?

Did Apple sell you this phone or did some Aussi Carrier sell it?

If the phone model was never approved for unlocking by Apple, I don't think a carrier can change that (yet).

But if Apple sold it directly, you definitely have a legitimate complaint.

How does this figure???

Use the SIM eject tool to remove the SIM tray. If the tray contains a small circuit board, in addition to the SIM, such as

it is not a legally unlocked iPhone. There are reports of these unlocking chips not working with some carriers, failing after a short time, and not working after iPhone updates.

There are also reports that the extra card may cause the SIM tray to get stuck inside the iPhone. Apple will not be enthusiastic about fixing this under warrantee.

I've checked and there is no circuit board or anything. My SIM goes striaght in.

I've just been on the phone to Apple who have confirmed that if I do Update then my phone will be locked as even though it is Officially Unlocked in Italy, it has NOT been officially unlocked BY APPLE!!

Some iPhones are illegally unlocked by removing and reprogramming the the baseband chip.

Since the 2.2 iPhone update replaces the firmware in the baseband chip, it will become locked again after the update. Where did you buy your iPhone in Italy? Was it an official Apple or cellphone store?

My iPhone is a replacement handset from Sata SRL in Italy. My original handset, which was bought from Euronics in Italy was faulty so I had to send it back, and received my current one as a replacement.

So this is an Officially bought iPhone. But it just seems that it may have been somehow unofficially unlocked by Sata in Italy.

Did the 2.1 update also replace the firmware in the baseband chip?

I managed to update from 2.0 to 2.1 with no problems at all.

and it is a US model, which shouldn't be available in Italy. Try calling Sata SRL in Italy about it.

i updated my fake factory unlocked iphone from 2.0 to 2.1 and didn't have any problems (i suppose it didn't update the baseband of the iphone). the odd only thing i noticed with it was that airplane mode didn't always work as it was supposed to (displaying "invalid sim" from time to time after activating airplane mode), but otherwise i had no problems with my iphone.

you should take your phone back to the store and get it replaced by a legitimate italian iphone. be sure to check its model in the store.
