Ipod touch not working after update

I just attempted to install the latest iPod touch software update via itunes. It downloaded and started installing and everything seemed normal. Then I got a weird error that said something along the lines of "Could not update ipod. Error 9" Now the ipod won't turn on at all, won't reset, and itunes doesn't recognize it. When I plug it into my pc (where it is synced), I get a windows bubble that pops up saying the device isn't recognized. When I plug it into my mac, nothing happens at all.

Any suggestions?

Following uo un my earlier post, I am delighted to report that I have solved my problem. A friend has an iPod Touch, so I connected my 'dead' iPod Topuch to his computer, it came up with a restore option. On clicking this my iPod was restored to default state, software version 1.1.5. I than connected it to my own computer, did a sync. and it restored all my files and is working perfectly.
When I now open iTunes it advises me that a later version - 2.2 - iPod software is available to be installed. But no way am I installing it until Apple sort out this problem.
Hope this might help anyone who has the same problem and can find someone else with a similar iPod and computer.

Hey guys, I seem to have fixed the problem.

First I held the two buttons simultaneously long enough until the ipod touch turned off. Important: After holding the buttons for 5 seconds the touch will restart, at this point don't let go of the buttons just yet. Wait until it turned off. Maybe around 8 seconds all in all.

Then I installed the latest itunes (8.02.20)

I restarted my computer.

Hooked up my ipod... waited for some time but itunes did not open automatically. At this point, I opened itunes. The first thing that prompted me is a message that tells me that my ipod is in restore mode and I have to restore my ipod to factory settings then the latest firmware will be installed.

After waiting for a while, it again prompted for an option to restore from backup or build a new ipod. Of course i chose restore from backup. That's it. Right now I'm just waiting for the sync to finish and I'm good to go. I got all my media back to my ipod with the latest 2.2 firmware.

Hope this helps!

I am also facing the same problemon my ipod touch 2g 16gb. But the error number was different - error(14). it showed up in the half way of installation.

I've given it back to the istore for a replacement or repairing. When they return the ipod i'm gonna double check it with the new 2.2 software. I think apple got a problem with the new touch and the 2.2 software. But they are silent about this. Where can we ask them about this??? Anybody have any idea?

This was the email that i received from apple support this afternoon.

"Hello,

I apologize those steps did not fix the problem. Also, technical support is aware of the issue and is working to resole.

They did advise you might want to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. In addition, when you restore the iPod, make sure you have the latest software upgrade."

The same extremely frustrating thing has happened to me, too, TWICE! (Error Code 9 during requested restore; Dead iPod; tried everything 3 times). This is the second one to die in the last week. Unacceptable! I was also advised to exchange the ipod at the apple store, which I did. The new ipod was up and running perfectly, but only for like 2 days until the problem occurred again. Now I have my second $300 brick this week. Come on apple, I'm about to jump ship!!! I really do LOVE the device, but it is not worth this amount of hassle due to a hastily rolled out and obviously flawed piece of software. Apple: how do you plan to fix this and ensure it doesn't happen again? If this isn't resolved soon, I'm returning mine for my money back and will never buy another ipod again (The Nokia N810 is starting to look like an attractive alternative).

Brian:
If you iPod starts to malfunction again, do exactly what you described doing again, but instead of restoring the iPod from backup, use the option "build a new iPod". The restore from backup will put back any corrupted files or if there was anything corrupted causing the initial problem, it will be put back on the iPod in its corrupted format. Build a new iPod function gets rid of that. Once you've built the new iPod, then you can sync all your files from iTunes back onto the unit.

I upgraded my iTouch just this past Tuesday, and it was working just fine. I was downloading numerous free applications and playing with it non-stop. Then one morning I woke up and I was just playing with defferent apps and checking my MySpace and stuff as usual. Then it would freeze up for a few seconds, so I would press the top button to turn it off and back on again. This same thing kept happenning, and now it's to the point where it won't turn on at all. I'm going to Best Buy fairly soon to get it checked out, since I got the iPod around this time last year, but I'm pretty sure my warranty is expired. Any help before having to go to Best Buy is greatly appreciated.

Seems I have a brick after the update as well. Thing is, when iTunes prompts me to restore, the restore advances ... but when the progress bar on my iPod Touch is complete, it just sits there, nothing happens ... not even after waiting a day. Cancelling gives an error 9 and then we're back to square one: the iPod Touch shows the 'connect with usb to iTunes' image when turned on. Any suggestions as to what to try?

Is there a way to reset the iPod Touch completely instead of trying to restore corrupted restore info?

I have the same problem. I have a really pretty paperweight. Called the Apple support, but they weren't very helpful. They wanted me to try a different computer, which I didn't have at home. Otherwise, I have to take it back to the Apple Store, which is a good 40 minute drive. I expect this crap from Microsoft, but I pay good money for Apple products to not have these issues. They really need to fix it.
