I just attempted to install the latest iPod touch software update via itunes. It downloaded and started installing and everything seemed normal. Then I got a weird error that said something along the lines of "Could not update ipod. Error 9" Now the ipod won't turn on at all, won't reset, and itunes doesn't recognize it. When I plug it into my pc (where it is synced), I get a windows bubble that pops up saying the device isn't recognized. When I plug it into my mac, nothing happens at all.
UPDATE: I managed to fix it. Go to this link and you can download the 2.1.1 firmware for your Ipod. It will take it back to what it originally was, but that's better than being a paperweight. I'll hold out until I see 2.2 fixed.
Dear Steve Jobs,
my iPod1B741QRXXXX 16GB don't work after 2.2 firmware update. Error 14. What thinks that Apple it can make for me? Best regards, and Happy Christmas, alberto capelli
I have my second bricked Ipod. The store was nice enough to replace the first one, which worked for about 2 weeks. When I plugged in the new one, I unwittingly hit update and now I have a 2nd brick.
Restoring to 2.1.1 results in error 9
Restoring to 2.2.2 results in error 14
bump this thread.
I do not know why I continue to buy Apple...every single product I have purchased from them has failed catastrophically...2 week old Hard drive, one month old shuffle, 5 month old shuffle 2g, and now 2 new Touch 2g.
I can't believe how many people are having this problem. It is utterly rubbish. my brand new ipod touch worked fine when i downloaded itunes and put some music on it, but to add the apps it said i needed to update. this i dutifully did (and paid for it- despite the ipod being brand new) and then it said error. when i try to restore it it eventually goes blank and fails and states error 1604. Apple haven't got back to my email, the nearest store is well over an hour away, i work during the hours the call centre is open. can anyone help?! I've tried all of the things suggested on this page but am getting no further. It is incredibly disappointing that apple have failed to resolve this issue.
Everybody keeps talking about restoring but what do you do if your Ipod is not being recognised by Itunes? After the update all that happens when i connect my ipod to my laptop is that windows tells me its found new hardware.
Can anyone tell me what to do? its driving me nuts!
turn it off. press and hold power/home buttons for 10 seconds. let go of power, keep holding home for 10 more seconds. itunes should prompt you to restore the ipod to a previous backup.
I too have had this problem. I had created a new thread because I didn't see this one. I bought my ipod from best buy 1 week ago. LOVED it, but after 5 days I got a "Data Corrupt" message-> Please restore. Following the restore I had a brick. No Apple Logo, nothing, just a blank screen. Windows could not find the unit. Tech support was just an automated voice offering to send me a box. Instead I took it back to Best Buy. Ipod touch #2 had firmware 2.1.1. I had not seen this message and being the geek I am I tried to update (big mistake). Update failed-> iTunes tells me to restore (Oh boy, here we go again). Needless to say brick #2. Now I do have other computers, but I had not yet seen this tread and did not try some of the above techniques. I returned my ipod (plus accessories) to Best Buy. I have been screening the forums because if I can find a way to maintain an ipod I really would like to get one, but after seeing this thead I am not sure I should. It appears that this issue has been present over a month and Apple has yet to even acknowledge that there is a problem. At the very least they could pull the faulty firmware (most companies do this if there is a software/hardware compatability issue). I am not quite sure what Apple is thinking. This is my first Apple since my Apple II+, and I must say that I am hesitant to get another one...or rather go back to Best Buy and buy a touch again. I really cannot understand why a company will not "support" it's user base (especially when it's products are not cheap). Personally the concept of sending it back in a box for them to magically fix is not "support".
Hi,
I have the same problem as everyone else. I have a 16GB touch that I too tried to update the software to 2.1 and my iPod will not restore either. I have spoken to tech support and they didn't really help at all, however they did say that my iPod touch sounds like it is history and that it is most probably a hardware failure. I find this hard to believe even though I am not a guru with computers, surely there must be someone out there with a fix to this problem without the threat of losing everything on the iPod. Can someone please help.
I'm with you Dr. After speaking to tech support they sounded as this was never heard of before. Surely they have got to be kidding I mean they creted this beast but apparently can't fix it. I have been trying everything to get mine back up and running now for 2 nights so I am as u can guess a little frustrated right now.
Hi again guys<
I have just emailed apple support about this and included the link to this thread. Might I suggest you all do the same and let them know how you feel about this. This might make things happen for us address is iTunesStoreSupport@apple.com
i too have had the same problem and like with everybody else Apple have taken the attitude that it is my fault either intentionally or accidentally. either way they wont accept responsiblity and im left extremely disppointed and angry
If anybody gets some progress with their Ipod or Apple admitting that it's their faut not mine then please let me know.
Apple say the Error 1611 doesn't exist and act dumb or shocked when you mention the Error 1611, yet look on their website and it's listed there. and surely if they programmed the Ipod/itunes to display 1611 in a specific circumstance then there must be a reason for that.
This happened to our ipod touch recently, i tunes said that there was a software update available to install. After installing, it suddenly said that it had found new hardware and to install the cd..except the touch didnt come with any cd and it didnt need anything when i originally installed it. Then it said it wouldnt recognise the hardware and the ipod just showed the icon with the usb connecting to itunes. I left the ipod overnight and had a look on the internet the next day - thankgoodness i found this thread which had a number of helpful hints. I was really annoyed when i found out that apple know about this problem and yet to continue to make it available on i tunes to download. I will certainly be e-mailing apple as suggested in a previous post to tell them how i feel.. Anyway after reading about 6 different solutions i am pleased to say that the first one i tried worked. It involved another computer though so it may not be helpful to everyone;
I have another laptop which has never had i tunes or an ipod installed on it so i downloaded the latest version of itunes through the internet and then plugged in the ipod. Thankfully it recognised it and on the summary page it said that the ipod needed to be restored. So i clicked the restore button and within 5 minutes the ipod was working again. It did wipe off all the applications and music but this was all on another computer. I then plugged it back into the pc and thankfully it recognised it again. I then pressed sync and it restored all the songs and applications. Hopefully this will work for some of you!
