Obscene ad posts on many web pages

Limnos, thank you! I should have checked this forum months ago, the ViMax ads were on almost every web page, it was frustrating, you fix really worked.

I am new to the discussions, but I have one further problem with theses ads. I cannot go into my network under System Preferences and change anything. There is a window that constantly pops up and says, "Your network settings have been changed by another application." But I cannot close the window to manually change anything. Can you help?

This topic has been pretty heavily covered in several other threads on the Tiger forums. I suggest you browse back over the past couple of days because it comes up several times a day.

I also suggest that it is almost always a good idea to start your own topic when you have a question, especially when it is so different from the topic of this thread as yours is. Many times although a problem may seem similar it can have different solutions and it is easier for us all to keep things sorted out if we can have a common exchange rather than us having to address replies specifically to you. If somebody feels they have to address a response to you specifically in a topic somebody else started then it is time to start your own topic. It also means we can focus specifically on your question. 🙂

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

Trying to follow your instructions here, Limnos -- however my Network preferences pane doesn't allow me to do as you suggest. I hope you (or someone) can take a glance at my situation and help me out, as I also seem to be afflicted by a DNS changer.

When the pane opens, Location is set to Automatic. Airport is highlighted in the list of connection types on the left, and my secure netowrk is selected in the Network Name menu.

To start, I click the "Advanced..." button.

First, TCP/IP and DNS are two separate tabs within the Network pane -- not, as your recommended fix indicates ("Preferences>Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers"), a hierarchical relationship.

Forging ahead...

1. I click on TCP/IP. The TCP/IP pane is set to "Configure IPv4: Using DHCP". (Should I be setting this to "Using DHCP with manual address"?)

2. I click on DNS. I have two addresses in the DNS Servers box. (They are 85.255.116.162 and 85.255.112.110.) Both are greyed out. I can click on the "plus" ➕ button (next to "IPv4 or IPv6 addresses"); in this way I can add DNS servers as you suggest, but the two already there cannot apparently be edited or removed using the "minus" button. I added the two addresses you recommend after these two and restarted; nothing changed.

You're actually in the Tiger/10.4 forums, and Leopard/10.5 is quite different, but are as you state.

1. No, no need to do that unless you want/need a Static IP.

2. Yes, those grayed oyt ones are ones picked up from a Router, Modem, your ISP, or poisoned ones. The ones listed are owned by a Ukrainian outfit doing business through Amsterdam !!!

Sooooo, unless you're located near the Ukraine, you need to rid yourself of those.
