Apple TV - Optical audio cable problem

HI All,
Firstly I apologise now if this has been answered elsewhere (this is my first post) anyway.. I've just bought apple tv which is connected to my panasonic tv through HDMI. I'm trying to get it to play through my panasonic home theatre system by connecting with an optical cable but the only way it seems to work is through the red/white audio cables. Does anyone know how I can do it without the audio cables??

Hello,

I was having the same issue with my Apple TV:
Component going into my Savant ROSIE System 2 with video processing module,
and toslink into my Yamaha AVR.

I was very frustrated last night because I wanted watch a movie with the wife but I got NO sound. I tried the obvious; loose cables, assignable I/O issues in the AVR but NADA!

I then left it un-plugged overnight and in the morning after it booted all is normal.
