Volume control icon stuck and won't stop "popping"!!

17" MBP with 10.5.5

All of a sudden the volume icon turned up on my screen. It stays on top. It is stuck there. I can't turn the volume up or down with the keys. Also, and most annoying, is that the sound it makes when you adjust volume is stuck in the continual "popping" sound that is default. "Thwack....thwack...thwack.....".

I also unchecked "Play feedback when volume is changed" in the Sound Effects preference pane. I rebooted. The volume icon is stuck on top of the screen (in front of all apps) and the "thwacking" continues.

I just had the logic board replaced at the Apple store 2 weeks ago after 3 (3 hours round trip) visits. Now this.

So basically, I can't play any audio (without the thwacking sound), the icon is stuck and I am going insane.

Any help appreciated.

Try resetting PRAM

■ Shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R, continuing to press until you hear the startup sound for the second time. This resets the computer’s parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
IMPORTANT: Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.

I neglected to say I already did that. Same thing happens. This is the most annoying problem. Looks like I need to spend yet some more time with Apple support, set up a Genius Bar appt. and drive 1 and 1/2 hours to the store. For the 5th time in 4 weeks. I'm starting to lose it....

Well, great minds think alike 🙂

Not being a believer in coincidences, I suspect that the logic board replacement is related to this issue. A loose wire, connector, poorly seated board or chip?

FYI, my problem is resolved. It appears to be related to a Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 peripheral. When that was unplugged and I restarted, there was no problem.

I suspect the cognitive dissonance of a Microsoft device plugged into a Mac finally reached critical mass.
