Print>Open PDF in Preview>SoftProof

Anyone know what activates the "SoftProof" checkbox when you go to preview something before printing? Mine is always dimmed.

15 PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

"Soft proof" is a color-management term, so I tried a couple things. Soft proof does become available if you selected ColorSync in the Color Matching section and chose a profile, which makes sense from a color management point of view, because when you check that box, you aren't just previewing the layout of the print job, you're previewing the color response on the profiled device.
