iPod restore error (14)

A few weeks ago my ipod(8GB) said i was using about 4gig in "other" i deleted all my apps and it still didnt go down, so i clicked restore and update, my ipod updated however since then has been in "recovery mode."

When trying to restore I get the following message:
+The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)+

The ipod screen displays a picture of iTunes symbol with the usb cable arrowing towards it.

i have tried using a different computer(also windows xp), using a different usb, holding down home button and on/off button aswell as reinstalling itunes and none of these have worked.

I seem to have the same problem as so many others. My computer can no longer recognise my iPod hardware - it is now an 'unknown device' in Windows XP after breaking in the middle of an iPod software upgrade. I expected better of Apple.

Can anyone explain the comment of BMuniz (posted 10 Feb 2010)? What's an md5 or an ipsw? If this is a fix I'd love to know what it means.

Has anyone had any success chsing their warranty on this issue?

Good luck.

I had this problem last night and went in circles for about 3 hours. This morning found a VERY useful post in this chain from 2009.
Here's what I did (MacBook - Leopard -10.5.8):
1) Assure that you have a good, reliable connection to the internet
2) Unplug the iPod from the computer
3) Locate the iPod update file on your hard drive. I found the file here:
<HDD Device Name>/Users/<My User Name>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
The file is named iPod2,1 3.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw
4) Delete this file
5) Plug the iPod back into the computer and allow the restore process to occur.

Mine came back and all appears right.
Hope this helps.
