10.5.6 hangs on installation

The latest version of Leopard (10.5.6) downloaded automatically via Software Update. However, when I attempted to install, the process hangs on "configuring setup." My MBP, after 15 mins, is still in that mode. I did a forced restart on my Mac Pro, which returned me to 10.5.5.

Anyone else run into the same problem?

MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

It is always a good idea to use the combo udpater whenever the OS version number changes. Small, incremental software updates or security fixes are much "safer" to install using Software Update. Always make a bootable clone first and always repair permissions, too.

On my MacBook 2.4 gHz Core 2 Duo the combo updater installed with no glitches.

The exact same symptoms here.

I've tried installing the update twice (PowerMac G5 2.7GHz) and ended up powering it off. I am not taking chances anymore.

Managed to download and install the update via SU, but now the system is even more unstable than before.

I work in a Graphic Design/Printing Company, and use the CS3 Software everyday. It does not help with I attempt to print something and the entire machine locks up. Thankfully, my only saving grace is I am able to use my personal Dell XPS Notebook to actually get work done.....

Dear Apple:

This question is marked "Answered." Yet, 5 minutes ago was my second attempt at this installation/update, and it failed -- again. IT IS CLEARLY NOT RESOLVED IF PEOPLE ARE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS.

Apple, you shouldn't be wasting people's time with this kind of craptastic "update." The Software Update should be pulled and fixed.

Since I bought my MBP in 2007, your hardware and software has totally fallen into a black hole of quality. I just downgraded to a G5 and Tiger because of problems like this.

This is why I decided to cross-over to "The Darkside" and purchase a Dell. Once upon a time, nothing was better than an Apple. Then I bought a new MBP... actually two of them, and a MP... All of them died, trying to do what I do with simple ease with my homebuilt PC's....

It would appear Apple is drawing attention, and paying little to quality.
(Yet, My OLD iMac G3 and PowerMac G3 STILL work flawlessly... My new iPod Touch and iPhone, yea... sent those back like the plague.)

I had the same problem. White MB (Aug 2008). I tried the update through Software update. (No apps open whatsoever) Clicked reboot. Machine was stuck in Preparing for Update. Tried it a second time again same problem waited about 45 minutes. In both cases I power cycled the MB and it came back with 10.5.5.

Then I downloaded the Combo Update ran it and it worked just fine.

I think there is a glitch in the Version that comes through Software update, at lease for my white MB (190 MB Download). Will try it later on with my Unibody MB and my 2 years old white MB. Fingers crossed.

Nobody here works for Apple. We are all users, just like yourself so writing to Apple on these boards means nothing.
You can file a bug report or phone them.

The fact that this question is marked "Answered" means that you should start a new thread with your issues and anything you did or did not do to troubleshoot it.
Posting into to an "Answered" thread is never a good thing to do.
