10.5.6 hangs on installation

The latest version of Leopard (10.5.6) downloaded automatically via Software Update. However, when I attempted to install, the process hangs on "configuring setup." My MBP, after 15 mins, is still in that mode. I did a forced restart on my Mac Pro, which returned me to 10.5.5.

Anyone else run into the same problem?

MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I had the exact same hang as posted here on my iMac 3.0Ghz machine. The solution for me was to first remove the update files from

<your hard drive>/Library/Updates/Mac OS X Update/Packages/*

In my case the update files were only 45M instead of the 190M that the updater indicated. After removing the files and running software update again, the install went flawlessly after the updated re-downloaded the proper size update.

The method for removing the botched download of the update is approximate; please be careful! And, credit goes to "redstain" who posted how to do this in this thread (near the bottom at the time of this posting):

My Mac Pro breezed through the System Update installation of 10.5.6. My MacBook Pro hung at the configure portion of the installation, twice. I downloaded the combo installer and the installation went fine on the MacBook Pro.

Hey Apple... This type of crap is the reason I no longer use a Windows machine. Please don't fall into the Microsoft way of things. I don't want to look for another alternative to computer idiocy. For God's sake, both the machines and the software are your creations.

Thanks for the link.
The stand alone 10.5.6 updater worked perfectly for me.

IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE 10.5.6 Software Updater then DOWNLOAD THE STAND ALONE version identified above. It resolves the problems for me on several different machines.

Thanks to all participating in this discussion.

NO THANKS TO APPLE for the time I had to waste this morning.

How about new displays Apple? 🙂
