You know what Tyke, let me start over. I'm going to assume you hadn't read my second post before you commented and it was a simple misunderstanding. Let me try to do something that may actually be productive.
Thanks I appreciate that.

1. My MBP was a CTO model, not one of the standard configurations. It's a 2.8 with 4 GB of factory RAM and a 320 GB 7200 RPM drive. It arrived about 10 days after the initial models hit the stores.

I'll be frank Kbeat, I have no idea what a CTO is?, I bought my unit on the 24th November last month from an Apple Store in Central Helsinki. I have installed the RAM myself and successfully I will add, 4GB Crucial, after this RAM upgrade there were less general issue but the external display issues continued and in the same manner.

2. I immediately changed my GPU to the 9600 and haven't switched back. I've never used the 9400.
KBeat wrote:
Funnily enough the 9600 is the one that has the smoothest performance but as I use the unit on location (I'm a photographer) I select the 9400 on most occasions.
When I get home and use my external display most of the time I forget to switch it to the 9600, if I'm lucky and the display is detected then there's no way I'm restarting it to change GPU, the likely hood of the display failing to be detected is 99.9% I need dual displays.
I am aware of the 'temp fixes' or 'bands' aids that many other users call them, these are also quoted by Apple staff when on the Apple care help line, this includes:
1: Rest P RAM
2: Un-check 'Auto adjust brightness in ambient light changes'
In both 9400 & 9600 configurations.
3: Select 'Better Battery Life' in the Energy Saver in System Preferences.
4: Restart the unit.
5: Re-install OSX.
Been there, done that, over and over, got the t-shirt, redesigned the t-shirt and capitalized on coffee mugs and keyrings instead 🙂

3. At the office, my MBP is hooked up to a year old 23" ACD using the Apple MDP->DVI adaptor. I mostly run Aperture and Final Cut Express. Aperture in particular puts a lot of load on the GPU.

I'm running Lightroom and Photoshop, my bread and butter software.
They also put a lot of pressure on GPU causing temperatures at the upper left hand corner of the MPB, near to the mag safe port, to exceed 80°C.

4. I have my MBP set to never sleep when plugged in. I have the screen saver come on after 10 minutes and the display to sleep after 20.

Ditto.

5. Additionally I have a wireless Mighty Mouse, 4 FW800 hard drives daisy chained, an EyeOne Display 2, a sandisk card reader, and an Intuit tablet, printer, and scanner all hooked up.

Firewire 800 CF card reader, 2 External Firewire HDD's, Graphics Tablet, Logitech Trackerball Mouse (I love em) etc, so quite similar to yourself.

6. Recently, when at home the MBP is plugged into the new 24" LED display. Prior to their release, I used it at home sans display.
So really the element of using third party displays has no significance to the issues. I am using a Samsung 2493HM.

That's the set up. Now, before the various firmware patches I had several issues. Often, after unhooking all my peripherals and display at work, closing the lid and putting it in my bag, the MBP would awake to a black screen when arrived at home. Usually, but not always, I could fix this by closing the lid again for a minute and trying again. Sometimes I had to do a hard reset. This behavior occurred both hooked up to a display and when it was not. This has not happened since the last firmware patch.
I also encountered a lot of hangs when trying to shut down or restart the MBP. It would act as if there was an application that was frozen, even though none were running. This too hasn't happened since the patches.
Finally, I had lots of problems with the track pad. Most have been fixed since it was updated, but the button is still too stiff and loud.
I use my MBP all day and it's pushed pretty hard. So far, thankfully, I've not had any particular issue with either external display. Perhaps there is something in what I listed above that differs from how you and others use your MBPs that will account for why I don't see the same issue. Hope that helps!

We have very similar uses here, so all I can say is your lucky K.
Firmware has wiped your troubles away but there are many of us out there that the firmware and OSX update has done squat for.
Secondly I am not trying to make out that every single MBP has these issues but there are certainly too many for Apple to be twirling their hair and sucking their thumbs over. As they are doing.
What I want is some honesty, Apple should alert folk if this is hardware related.
I don't use the world 'pro' when it comes to my work but it is that 'work', I work for a living and my gear has work and not fail at all.
This is where my patience wears thin, they have consistently stressed that the issues are software related, 'wait for the updates folks eyuk yuk' but the updates come and the problems remain. Now what are we supposed to do?
If it is a hardware issue, they should have the decency to release information so we can take the relevant action.
Also how come the things runs so hot? surely that is not right?
