10.5.6 breaks Dvorak keyboard shortcuts in Eclipse

I just confirmed this on two separate machines. After installing 10.5.6 the keyboard shortcuts in the Eclipse Java development environment don't work properly. It seems that they are interpreted as QWERTY (with some exceptions, like Cmd-Q and Cmd-,). It's extremely frustrating to try to work with all the keyboard shortcuts moved around. Does anyone NOT have this problem, or have a solution for it? I tried putting back a few suspicious files to the pre-update versions, but with no success. I also tried some other Java applications and they seem to work fine. (And of course I've reinstalled Eclipse.) This is a very strange and irritating problem.

The new subject line sums it up. Perhaps someone at Apple has assumed -- from the original title of our thread -- that this discussion is limited to the intersection of Eclipse users and dvorak users, surely a relatively small (if vocal and smart) group.

So, I'm replying to this thread with a more accurate subject line, now that it's clear that many apps are affected. It's also possible that other non-Qwerty keyboards are affected -- has anyone done further trouble-shooting of that possibility?

(Have people at Apple reflected that the "Think Different" mantra requires robust support for Dvorak? Or was that merely a catchy slogan?)

For those anxiously awaiting a response from Apple. Apple seems to be aware of the issue!

On December 23rd I filled a bug report with Apple. Yesterday I was told that "this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering". They closed my bug report and kept tracking the issue under another id (mine was a duplicate). No hints as to when this will be fixed though.

I got the same response to my bug report today. Looks like they are consolidating them.

The real question is why it takes so long for Apple to release the update. Perhaps they underestimate the severity of the issue for us Dvorak users, and instead of fast-tracking the fix they are lumping it with a whole suite of other regression testing.

Meanwhile, I've got a Word document that's all in italics because I tried to copy the text, and I'm so tired of looking at that stupid Preferences window every time I press command-W....

I'm also affected by this bug. It seems that some keys work in their Dvorak positions, but all the Eclipse handled keys are in the Qwerty positions.

Save works in both the Qwerty (S) and Dvorak (;) positions.
There is no mapping for cut since the X key maps to Q which quits Eclipse -- very annoying.

I hadn't noticed until today since I have a hardware Dvorak keyboard at work but I had to work from home today and was using the built-in keyboard.

Probably the best way is to open a bug report at https://bugreport.apple.com/ . Apple will eventually close the issue with state "Duplicate /6448743". Unfortunately that bug report can't be viewed as it isn't public. According to their help page:

Duplicate:
+The reported issue is being tracked under the original bug number. You may check status of this issue by writing to ADC Bug Reporting.+

So the next step would be to email "ADC Bug Reporting" requesting a status update.

I too find it extremely frustrating that such a major productivity impacting regression is taking Apple so long to fix. It's even more frustrating that Apple is so non-communicative about it. I'd love to see an engineer working on the problem explain to this thread what the issue is, what it takes to solve it, and when we can expect a fix or workaround. It's the least they can do for us customers short of supplying us with a solution for the problem.

Apple Engineering is still investigating the problem I was told by email yesterday. However I think I have just found a workaround/solution to the problem. I have not tested it extensively and hence it might cause some unexpected side effects, but it looks promising. I tried the hint above. I had not upgraded to 10.5.6 yet, so I just copied my 10.5.5 Carbon.framework, upgraded, and then renamed my 10.5.6 one, and put the 10.5.5 one in its place. I tried it with eclipse with all the various shortcuts, and it worked. I have not tried it with other applications, and I don't know how people who have already upgraded can work around the problem in the same way.
