10.5.6 update crash followed by kernel panics

I ran the update, but it crashed midway through complaining about the media it was being run from, tried a restart, but kernel panics, tried single user mode, but get multiple "Package 0 didn't get an HPET", to fail at the end in "No HPETs available...CPU(s) configured incorrectly" followed by panic and some stack trace dump (included at end), tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and the PRAM, all to no avail, ran the extended hardware test with no errors, but I am able to boot up into the emergency boot partition created by Tech Tool Pro.

Apart from reformatting my hard drive is there any way to recover my Mac, please!

since I got back from work, the thread has moved on significantly, and another poster stated that Apple told them to reinstall the OS.
I still suspect that it is something to do with 3rd party software somehow. Touch wood, my two macs are running fine on the 190mB (ordinary) update.

Mmmh!
Hope you can sort out your machine, too, but you seemed to have tried the lot.

OK. I have same problem -- kernel panic during 10.5.6 installation and dead OS after that. I have no up-to-date backup to rollback to 10.5.5 (be carefull!!!). I try to remove .kext file. This gives me ability to startup MacBook but it was strange... I know that update wasn't here but "About this Mac..." says 10.5.6. Bad. Installing combo update (600+ mb) doesn't help -- kernel panic again.
What helps me. I put my MacBook Pro in target disk mode. Connect it to the other MBP i have near me and install 10.5.6 combo on my disk via that MBP.
Now i have working 10.5.6 without (i hope) any glitches. Im 100% sure its working 10.5.6 copy. And btw this procedure help me with kernel panic i have when unmount smb:// share while VMWare Fusion is running.

So if you have this weird problem - try Target Disk Mode and install combo onto your disk via other Mac.

I just had the exact same problem with 10.5.6 on my MacBook, all the way down to the identical "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" message. It looks like Software Update is doing its check for valid install media AFTER it installs certain bits in some cases. As best I can tell, the kernel and the power management KEXT are out of sync with each other as a result of the failed installation.

To solve this temporarily, either attach by FireWire disk mode to another machine and move /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext to someplace else outside /S/L/C, If you don't have FireWire, boot from some other disk then do it. In Terminal:

cd /System/Library/Extensions
sudo mv AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext /
(enter your admin password here)

After doing that, my MacBoook no longer panics. Actually I did it the hard way---I booted single-user, and in the twenty seconds before it panics, typed

mount -uw /
cd /System/Library/Extensions
mv AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext /
sync;sync;sync
mount -o ro /

I don't recommend doing it this way, though. 😀

Wow. While trying to install the combo update from my MacBook with that KEXT disabled, the system did a double panic (panic, then a second panic halfway through drawing the panic dialog). Yikes. Judging by the panic dialog, the OS decided it was going to load that KEXT... while it was still being written to the disk.... I didn't think such a thing was even possible.... Eek!
