10.5.6 breaks Areca Raid Card 1220

Confirmed! I got the same e-mail from Areca, installed 10.5.6, installed the drivers before rebooting (since the Areca drive is my boot drive), and rebooted.

The first reboot hung deep in the video driver, but a second reboot fixed it. I'm now running fine on 10.5.6.

Other than that, they aslo have this info posted at their site which is very useful for mac users.

To all our RAID storage clients, please do not update your os X.5.6 via online update. Go to Apple website, download the update. Save it to your local hard drive, unplug any external storage solution while updating.

Jay I am having troubles getting the updates installed. if you are around. I could use some help. ARECA docs are just not great.

Do you run archttp64? what is password? I installed updates and ran archttp64 with no password but my system will still not see the RAID.

My ARECA 1221 card is now working great. I went installed the software from the website and it did not work. This one did. Finally.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier! I don't use archttp64 anyway; the 1680 has an external Ethernet jack, so I access the web interface through that.

Any one know how to apply this update to a non-bootable volume post-10.5.6? I found a kext deep in the installer, can I just plop this in my system/library/extensions folder and boot?

I'd suspect you can; I looked at the Areca driver download once, and other than the kext, everything else is for the CLI and local HTTP proxy (which are just for administration).

Plus, no harm in trying! If it doesn't work, you'll still have an unbootable volume.

Didn't work.

I extracted the kext, copied it to the S/L/E folder, changed persmissions and ownership, deleted the S/L/Extensions.mkext or whatever, and it didnt work.

I restored from time machine, ran the areca installer, it exited abruptly (although still leaving behind the kext). I then downloaded and installed the full combo updater from Apple, rebooted, and it failed.

Did I need to reboot after the areca installer and before the updater?

This is really depressing =(

Try this, which I think is how I did it:

1. Restore 10.5.5 from Time Machine
2. Run the combo updater, but don't reboot*
3. Now run the Areca installer

The built-in Areca driver actually changed from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6, so the combo updater is going to end up overwriting the latest Areca driver, which leaves you right where you started.

* Unless I'm misremembering, and the combo updater is one of those Apple updates that makes you reboot right at the start... in which case I don't remember exactly how I did it, but the key is to somehow run the Areca installer after the combo updater.
