BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart - after Update 2008-008

BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart. This started occurring after installation of the Security Update 2008-008. I can't rename files or folders.
Is there a solution? A workaround? A software update? I repaired permissions but that didn't help.

I also have this problem, however, I have found a workaround that seems to work for me.

1. Select the file/folder you wish to rename (click once).
2. Click once to highlight the name.
3. Click once in the name to insert the cursor.
4. Hit return to de-highlight, but not deselect.
5. Click in the name again to highlight and then rename.
6. Hit return.

Hope this helps.

I have discovered that the *StuffIt AVR* (ArchiveViaRename) function of *StuffIt Deluxe 8.0* that I had installed on my Mac *was the cause of the Finder restarting when renaming a file* after the Security Update 2008-008 for Mac OS X 10.4.11 PPC.

There's a control panel for StuffIt AVR in System Preferences, bottom row, and once I turned it off, the Finder rename file functionality is normal. This is clearly something with the Finder and StuffIt AVR. Once the editing of the filename is done, one hits return or clicks somewhere else to confirm and end the editing, then StuffIt AVR is supposed to check the name for it's archiving/dearchiving functionality. That's where the crash happens. I disabled StuffIt AVR for now and will look for updates. It's a 3rd party/Apple incompatibility issue.

*Good luck everyone and thanks for your help!* Onward to the next cool thing to do with my Mac stuff.

I'm having the exact same problem. However I can rename the file after a couple of tries. started maybe a week ago? has gotten worse. Tried some of your suggestions. It worked fine in safe mode. dragged preference to desktop and rebooted. however the problem continues. I used the disk utility to check HD and nothing wrong. also repaired the permissions and no change in behavior of finder when renaming files.
