10.5.6 + iRiver Music Manager = Kernel Panic

After upgrading to 10.5.6 (via the Combo Updater), when I run the iRiver Music Manager ( http://iriverinc.com/support/ultra/iFP-manager-mac.aspx) software running, and plug in my iRiver ifp-899 MP3 player via USB, I get an immediate kernel panic[*]. Very repeatable. I submitted a bug report ( http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/bugrptform.html).

Anyone encounter this problem? Any workarounds? Anyone have experience using the open source IFP driver under OS X ( http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net/)?

Same for me (iRiver IFP-995, iRiverMusicManager v1.1.3).
Has anyone reported this to iRiver? I mean, their devices are great but the support is really lame. They still only have the v1.1.3 version of the software available (still only PPC, even after two years of Intel Macs... Hello?).
Should i TimeMachine back to 10.5.5 now? I am using the iRiver on a regular basis to record analog stuff...

I also mailed to iRiver support. Their answer is just laughable:

"Please do not try to connect any Iriver device to a macbook. the iriver product line was not made compatible for macs o/s."

If thats the final say, goodbye iRiver! I replied mentioning the fact that they themselves provide a Mac OS X version of the MusicManager software.
I am curious to hear what answers others will get from them...

Thinking about this since last night - I haven't tried the opensource driver mentioned in Jaime's post - and since it hasn't been worked on for some time - I'm not sure it is worth the effort. However, I still want to use this player so I believe the best course is to change to the UMS version of the firmware and just use it as direct USB device. The main objection I see on the discussions on the net are that the recording funtion in that mode is extremely limited. I don't use it for recording, so it isn't an issue. Other than that - it would continue to operate as an MP3 player.

It will require me to drag out my old Windows laptop - the Music Manager program is what is used to change the firmware. But, at this point, the player is unusable and frankly - I think we're too small a community for anyone to care about our problem any time soon.

Short answer - yes. That is exactly what I did - I have always used mine with my Mac. You also need to download the version of the UMS firmware that is appropriate for your player. I have an iFP 895 so I used the version that I found here http://www.jankarlsbjerg.com/blog/archives/2007/03/26/ums-firmware-for-iriver-if p-89x/ The discussion thread on this site is also useful. Whatever you do, avoid the endless "driver" sites that often just get you into spam and other scams you don't want.

I found the same version on the iRiver site more than a year ago, but I don't see it now. If you search for the UMS firmware for your player by name you should be able to find it. A lot of people made the change when it became available. I should have, but now it is a necessity for people like us.
