10.5.6 + iRiver Music Manager = Kernel Panic

After upgrading to 10.5.6 (via the Combo Updater), when I run the iRiver Music Manager ( http://iriverinc.com/support/ultra/iFP-manager-mac.aspx) software running, and plug in my iRiver ifp-899 MP3 player via USB, I get an immediate kernel panic[*]. Very repeatable. I submitted a bug report ( http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/bugrptform.html).

Anyone encounter this problem? Any workarounds? Anyone have experience using the open source IFP driver under OS X ( http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net/)?

As I don't use mine for recording - so I don't know a lot about it but on the site where I pointed to in my previous message ( http://www.jankarlsbjerg.com/blog/archives/2007/03/26/ums-firmware-for-iriver-if p-89x/) the following comment was left:

+I have installed the v 1.28 and v 1.95 on my IFP-895 and IFP-899 and the firmware works perfect on both. I have noticed some changes in the settings options. You no longer have the option of recording anything above 96kbps. So for those hoping to record at 128kbps, 192kbps, and even 320kbps you will have to stick with the v 1.25 for awhile.+

I don't have a reliable link to the 1.25 version, but I have seen it around on discussions and boards so a Google search should yield several results.

I couldn't get the firmware to upgrade using Music Manager with Vista. It looked like it was working, but didn't install the firmware upgrade. I realized my old Mac had iRiver music manager on it, with an older version of the OS, and I was able to get the firmware on there. I can see podcasts, my songs, and I was able to record. Looks like I have to fool with the levels some, but I love that my iRiver is like a little hard drive now -- don't need no stinkin' music manager.

Thanks again to Miguel. Here is the link I used to find the upgrade stuff:
http://www.jankarlsbjerg.com/blog/archives/2007/03/26/ums-firmware-for-iriver-if p-89x/

And for the record, I used got this version of the firmware upgrade to work
http://www.jankarlsbjerg.com/download/ifp890us-ums128.zip (the other one didn't work for me.) Hope this is helpful.

Using iRiver's Music Manager program - you plug your player into a USB port, start the Music Manager and select the Firmware Update. It will walk you through the procedure. Just be sure you have a good battery and the version of firmware you are going to put on the device available. This procedure works on a PC or Mac, but if your Mac is running 10.5.6 you will get a kernal panic before you can attempt it.

And don't unplug it until it shuts off the device! (the only way you know it is done)

When is restarted there will be a few moments that the LCD says "initiallizing" and then it is back to being a player.

hello all,

I had the same problem with my ifp-790 after the last OSX upgrade.
Fortunately I have a backup computer that doesn't have the update yet.

But I didn't have the ums update file for the 790 and finding it was a bit of a search party. This is where I found one:

http://www.iriverrussia.com/support/downloaddetail.asp?id=256&pid=49&resurl=%2Fsupport%2Fsupport.asp%3Fpid%3D49%26type%3Ddownload%26scid%3D3

Note: this is the EU version, and I believe this is not for 780.
It installed with no problems using the Iriver update function. My ifp-790 can now be used directly via usb. 🙂

Thanks for your posting on the Kernal Panic. I am dealing with the very same thing.

Just so I understand: you used a Windows machine to change the iRiver Music Manager to UMB. This was the open source IFP driver under OS X ( http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net/)?

Once I do this, will I be able to continue to run the iRiver player on my MAC?

thanks for your help

I did change the firmware to the UMB (USB device) version and I can report there is no panic, the device is recognized, files transfer fine with finder and best of all - my ifp895 continues to work just fine. For me - this is a working solution.

Charlie -

You're a bit confused - you need to use a Windows machine to change the firmware on your iRiver player so it will become a standard USB flash memory device that happens to play MP3 files. You cannot use your Mac to do this because as you know, when you plug your player in with the iRiver Music Manager running, it causes a kernal panic.

The iRiver music manager program that runs your Mac is needed to access your iRiver player, add or delete files when your player has the original firmware on it. When you have changed the firmware to the UBM version - you will no longer need the iRiver music manager software on your Mac. You will be able to add and delete files just like it was a regular, USB flash memory "jump drive." You will "mount" it in file manager the same way you access your hard drive.

The open source software you have pointed to in your link IS NOT related to this issue in any way. It is a driver used for Linux OS versions to be able to access the device - because there was never a iRiver Music Manager written for Linux. Although Mac is Unix-based, this driver will not help you. The firmware file you need to load on your player are listed on the site mentioned in my original post about this fix.

I also saw your post about the files loaded on your player now - if you make this change will the files on the player be lost? - All I can say is I think so. I don't store files for any length of time on my player because I use it to listen to podcasts. When I am done listening to them, I just delete them off the player. I have already saved the files I want to keep to my external hard drive by the time I put them on the iRiver player. You will find however that after you make the change, the odd approach iRiver had to "protecting" MP3 files - meaning you could not take them off the player like you could a regular USB flash drive - will be gone. With the UMB version, you can add, remove or delete files at will using OS X File Manager.

Hope that clears the fog... 🙂

One more thing - I didn't get the "version initials" right - what I am wrote as a UMB version is a UMS version. Too many darn initials!

As it says on the bottom of the page your post pointed to:
(Note: iRiver offers 'UMS' firmware for some iFP models. Devices running UMS firmware are compatible with generic USB Mass Storage drivers, and do not need any of the drivers mentioned here.)

Sorry - but I hope that clears it up.
