New Dual-Link Adapter on Gateway 30" Monitor, Thinks DVI!

I have the new dual-link cable attached between my macbook pro and a Gateway 30" Display. For some reason my display is only detected as having a regular dvi cable attached and won't support a resolution higher than 1920X1200. The monitor itself is capable of 2580X1600 and works on a Windows pc this way.

Do I have a defective cable or is there something I'm doing wrong?

I'm on a silver macbook with this gateway monitor. Using the dual link adaptor, the monitor and the computer don't recognize each other. Using the minidisplay to dvi adaptor, I get the monitor to work. However, when I change the settings to 1920*1200 in the operating system, there is no change in the display. I'm mirroring the display. Perhaps, I'm supposed to do otherwise, but I'm a recent Mac Convert.

Anyway, I'd be happy to keep the monitor if I could get it to run at even 1900*1200 and if I knew that when I got a macpro it would run at full resolution.

Any help on that?

I haven't tried the PIP option yet, as I have nothing to plug it into, but I will let you know when I do. It is just so frustrating that when I use bootcamp and I run the computer in windows, the mini displayport adapter works perfectly, but when I run in OS X, it doesn't work. Very ironic.

So do you have to install a driver to get it to work in Windows under Boot Camp? Just curious.

With mirroring turned on the system will output exact data to an external source, hence "mirroring".

You must turn mirroring off in oder to specify a resolution different than that of the main display.

The Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter displays 2560x1600 on the Gateway 30" from the new iMac 24" without problems. Perhaps the 10.5.7 OSX update fixed this issue on the MBP? This update had some specific fixes for the nVIDIA chipset.
