I know I can add video and audio tracks to a single QT entity and move them around, resize them, etc. I have not found a way to crop a video in QT. Is there a way to crop a video and save it "as reference"? Thanks.
Yes and no.
QuickTime Pro allows you to add a video "mask" track that could obscure part of the video and it is a very useful tool.
But it really doesn't "crop" the video (which would require a new file be made) or reduce the file size or dimensions of the new file.
MPEG Streamclip (free) has cropping tools and can export to QuickTime formats.

So I guess the answer is the unfortunate is "no" as I suspected. It really is unfortunate. I guess _we should suggest it to Apple_ and the QT development team. In my case, MPEG streamclip is not a a viable solution as I needed it to be within QT in order to use the acceleration provided by elgato's turbo.264 hardware, which crops but you cannot specify top, bottom, left and right margins. It does in "auto" and works in a acceptable way but I prefer full control, just like in MPEG streamclip... I guess it wouldn't hurt to suggest them to include support for the turbo.264. Thanks.

Use "Export to Other Formats..." option to access the "Elgato Export Presets" from within MPEG Streamclip.
Excellent! I will try it and that will definetly solve it. I'll post a follow up as soon as I test it... (right now the module is busy and will be for a few hours)
Well, the module is still busy but opened a file in MPEG Streamclip and in "Other Formats" all Turbo.264 settings are present with various export options. Nice! So, until Apple adds cropping to QT Pro, I guess i"ll be using the MPEGstreamclip-Turbo.264 combo for my cropping needs.
