"This computer not authorized"

I have iTunes stored on an external drive. I recently bought a new computer and when I sync my iPod, it gives me a message that says something like "This computer not authorized" and it does not sync the items I've downloaded from the store. How do I tell iTunes that this computer is the one now?

Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes.

I am getting the same issue.
My hard drive failed on my MacBook Air and it was replaced by our local Apple Store (in Sydney, AUS) under warranty. Rather than doing a full restore I re-installed many apps and changed the account names. I re-linked to my Music/Movie library, which I keep on an external drive. I thought all was okay.

First problem I noticed was that I got an Authorisation error when I tried to synch my iPhone. Tried all the usual de-authorise and re-authorise to no success. I then discovered that many of the tunes that I had purchased I could not play. I got the dialogue box asking asking for me to authorise. This I did, getting a box stating that the computer was already authorised. This cycle I repeated a few times.

I took the Mac back to the Apple Store and got them to try but to no success. So I am stuck with a nice new hard drive, some music I cannot play, an iPhone I cannot sync and iPhone Apps that I cannot update.

HELP PLEASE!!!!

Almost exactly the same here. The hard drive in my 15-month old iMac failed over new year and has been replaced under warranty. I restored the system from Time Machine but got exactly those messages. I'm now trying to sync my iPhone and sync is hanging and failing to sync "mail accounts" (I'm only trying to sync my .Mac account), and I'm getting the "Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copies to the iPhone because you are not authorized to play them on this computer" message. Help!

One thing that helped a few other folks - chane the itunes country in the itunes store. From the iTS home page, at the very bottm change the coutry by the flag icon.

Then try to buy something in the new country. Of course, itunes will not let you.

But when you sign into the new country it will say your account is no good there and take you to your "home" country....and hopefully, clear up the authroization mess.

scratch that, i think i may have figured it out... at least with regards to lightpainter4ever's issue which was the same as mine.

i kept getting the error message "loop", meaning the songs that were meant to play via my account in itunes kept asking for authorization and yet once i did it still wouldnt play... just kept bringing up the login prompt. and no, the deauthorize/authorize method didnt work, even with signing out then signing back in.

this sucked because it was affecting not only a select number of songs, but also my apps

TO FIX IT, what i did was deauthorized the computer, then signed out of the itunes account. i then quit itunes, opened it back up, AND DOUBLE-CLICKED ON ONE OF THE SONGS. at this point it asked me to log in, and i did, and voila! it applied the authorization across all the songs and apps in question

worked for me, i hope it works for everyone else!

I have the exact same problem. Apple has a support page on this so they know the problem exists, but none of the solutions worked. Apple Support phone line for over an hour did nothing . About 20 useless emails with itunes support did nothing. 3 hrs at the Genius Bar at an apple retail store did nothing.
I now own 4 i-bricks with hundreds of dollars of purchases that cant be used portably.

I have demanded they fix it or compensate me---havent heard much. Ready to expose them thru a local consumer reporter or the like.

Any other potential solutions greatly appreciated!!

I share your frustration and disappointment with the lack of apple support. I have a similar problem. The apple id that I use to purchase songs through the apple store is no longer in their system. Why apple deleted the id I don't know. Its clearly available with the songs info. Therefore unable to de-authorize/authorize the songs to be able to play. If there is a solution please let me know.

I have the exact same problem, but now it is getting worse. I have a new Dell, with XP. I moved all of my music from my old computer...lost 3 U2 albums and 1 AC/DC song. Oh well, I can deal with that. But now I can't listen to songs (probably 7 - 10 songs...I think) that I purchased via iTunes and can still see in my "Purchase History." On top of that, I had a credit of $6.48 in my iTunes account that is now gone. Pretty bummed and can't figure out a way to obtaine iTunes support.

Unfortunately, I'll need to add a "me too" to this list.

I have followed all of the suggestions on both this and other similar threads to no avail. In my case I changed my Apple account name recently as I no longer used that old email address. I had also at about the same time upgraded the firmware for my iPod Touch.

I first noticed that my apps for my iPod Touch weren't working. Then I noticed I couldn't play any purchased music on it. After testing I found that iTunes also couldn't play purchased music, giving me the authorize error message everyone's seen. After I read these discussions I realized that the new account name might be the problem and I changed it back. But I still have the same problem.

I have reinstalled iTunes, I've removed the SC Info folder, I've de-authorized my computer and authorized it again and I've followed all the information I could find, but nothing is working.

I've found that I can get my iPod apps working again by first deleting them and then downloading them from within the Touch. But as soon as I try to sync the apps via iTunes, they break again.

At this point I don't know if it is because I recently changed my account name or if it's because of the recent iPod Touch upgrade or if my computer is fritzing out on me. But I definitely need an answer to this. Please, Apple: help us out here!

I think I may have discovered why I at least am having this problem. It relates to an album purchased before I had a dot mac or iTunes account and was bought using my husband's account. I used TuneRanger to move my personal playlist onto my local machine from our central library (fab app) and this album was included - of course not purchased with my account. How can I get it to play or authorise it for my account?

I have to add myself to the me too list...I think that list is growing. There is something wrong with the itune software. Everything was working fine until two weeks ago. Half of my songs work and the other half does not (I am talking about the songs that I have purchased on itunes).
I have been unable to get real-time support from Apple. I am going to wait and after that I think that we should bring this problem to the attention of some local or national broadcaster....
This is just pathetic. First they protect the songs that you purchase so that you can only play on itunes and now you cannot even play the songs that you have purchased.
