I have read on this forum that unofficially you may try to throw yourself on the mercy of the court, and despite all the warnings when you buy the music that you may not download again for free and you really should make backups, they might let you do it if you can really convince them.

Transfer Purchases feature if applicable. If neither of these works, you will need to purchase the content again to get them back; Apple needs to pay the copyright holders for each download from the iTunes Store other than podcasts, album artwork, and iPod touch/iPhone applications.
