DVD drive goes to sleep all the time

If I don't use my DVD drive for a couple of minutes it spins down completely and cannot be accessed any more (if watching DVDs, DVD Player crashes, I can't see files on it any more, etc). The only way to reanimate it is to try to eject the media. That doesn't actually eject the media but it does spin up the drive (I can hear it again) so it can be accessed again. This is a Pioneer 111D (firmware 1.29) that came out of a PC. This drive doesn't have the same problem on the PC (I put it back to test). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks.

P.S. I don't have the original drive that came with this Mac. It was driving me nuts. It was too loud when watching burned DVDs (not pressed though) because it kept blasting at full speed.
