Can you reply with how you have the printer connected to your Mac. I ask because when previously helping another postee who was trying to connect to a Canon printer via Bluetooth, not via USB, he was getting the same error.
As for the software location, the files are copied to ./Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter. However, when you add the printer, you cannot manually browse to this location to add the printer. The printer software has to 'see' the printer when selecting it in the browser view, and if it does it will automatically select the appropriate model from its list.
In you case, by manually browsing to Canon via the the Print Using menu, you have bypassed the Canon software and found the Gutenprint v5.1.3 driver set, which is included with Leopard. Note that these drivers will also work to your printer, and in some cases are preferred over the Canon drivers.
So, if the Gutenprint drivers are not working, then it may have something to do with the connection to the printer...
