periodic Dual-link display problem with new adapter

I don't yet know what conditions cause it but I'll be working with my MacBook Pro connected to my 30" display when the screen "shifts" and then becomes practically unreadable. I have to disconnect the adapter and reattach it. The photos below show a detail of the problem and then how it looks after reconnecting the adapter.

Here are two movies showing the problem.

I have not yet called Apple, but has anyone else seem reports of this?

I've had the v1.02 firmware for 4 days now. The same problems happened to me the first day I used the new adapter.

I think I might have found the sequence of events that triggers the problem (for me). If I let the display go to sleep on its own, everything afterward seems fine. If I physically shut off the display using the button when I leave my desk and come back its likely the screen is messed up when I power it on using the button on the side. So far, that theory holds, but I've only been testing it for the last two days. I would be happier if I could at least make the problem reproducible.

From the Apple menu in the upper left of your screen choose About This Mac

In the About This Mac window click More Info...

System Profiler launches

In the Hardware section click Graphics/Displays

If you have more than one entry in the table on the right side of the window choose the active one, then in the lower section of the screen you will see your connected display and adapter along with Adapter Firmware Version

I have the 1.02 firmware and the adapter works fine for the most part connecting a 24" iMac (3.06GHz) to my 30" Cinema Display.

However, I get periodic horizontal flickering lines that are visible in the dark areas. If I set the whole background to black, its very visible. If I have a typical desktop pattern (photos and whatnot) you don't really see it, except in the dark areas toward the bottom of the screen.

If anyone has a solution to this problem I'd greatly appreciate it...but I feel fortunate that my problems aren't nearly as bad as some of the ones reported here.

Comon Apple! Please, please do something about this!!!

It's very frustrating! Some people actually have to work and neither want nor have the time to tinker around with their equipment all the time! I need a reliable system that just works!

And with your fri**in' adapter that's just not the case! Solve this problem!

Seriously... everything worked just fine with my 3-year-old MBP... and now this Mini-DVI/adapter is rendering my 30 inch display almost useless...

While I have suffered with this ridiculous problem for 9 months; I am happy to report that I've now gone 2 weeks without a problem.

I have an MBP 15" 5,1 running 10.5.6 (that is new) and a DVI Duallink adapter with firmware updated to 1.0.2 (that is new too!)

with both a firmware update and an OS update I've not (cross-fingers) had any problems.

Your mileage may vary.
cheers,
Andrew.

I've had this problem with my Apple 30" display for about six months. Changing Powerbooks, upgrading OS, and trading in the dual-link cable didn't help. I'm running with version 1.02 of the firmware.

However, thanks to a suggestion from Apple, I have now found a solution that is 90% effective. I installed a Tripp-Lite TL013-ND line conditioner ($200) to filter out line noise, and the static and blackouts have almost disappeared. Before this I had been using a $20 surge protector, but that evidently didn't filter all the noise out of the power supply.

The few blackouts and static bursts that do still occur seem to be caused by radio-frequency interference, and could possibly be eliminated using a grounded Faraday cage, but they are rare enough that I haven't felt the need to try this so far.

Thanks for update, but LOL!

A $200 line conditioner for a $100 adapter. For $100 Apple should have shielded the cable better? For 1.5 years, with all the same wires behind my desk, with the exception of me swapping out my PowerMac G5 for a Macbook Pro, the 30" never got interference. Only since the mini-display port has this happened.

Here is my ********, workaround, unacceptable solution. My laptop is set to lock the screen when it sleeps or screensaver comes on. Since the static only ever happens when the display comes back from screensaver or sleep, if the password dialog is all messed up and full of static, I press the Esc-key. It puts the display back to sleep or in the screensaver mode and I try again. This usually solves the static on the first try, but I've to repeat once or twice.

BARF!

I have a brand new MacBook Pro (bought late October, 2009) and a brand new dual-link display adapter. Latest firmware (1.0.2). My monitor is SyncMaster 305T+, which is a 30" with a native resolution of 2560x1600.

With my old MBP and old adapter everything worked flawlessly, but the new port/adapter does not work. I get most of the symptoms described previously; "snow", flickering, but most of the time the monitor just shows no picture at all.

Needless to say, Apple's secretive policy annoys me very much: I don't know if I should just sell the whole bunch of hardware or if there is a batch coming. I would like to actually start working, but Apple effectively keeps me waiting.
